of all sizes.
- Siemens supports BioNTech in converting to vaccine production at the Marburg plant
- Key parts of the new Manufacturing Execution System ready to use after only two and a half months
- Digitalization enables paperless documentation of production
The BioNTech SE biotechnology company based in Mainz has converted an existing facility in Marburg for the production of the Covid-19 vaccine in a record time with assistance from Siemens. The production plant has been producing the active substance since February and the vaccine BNT162b2 (also known as COMIRNATY®) since the end of March. BioNTech acquired a production facility for this in the fall of 2020 that was already equipped with capabilities for producing biotechnological substances. Through collaboration with Siemens and the team of experts on site in Marburg, the project timeline for converting the existing facility for the production of mRNA-vaccine was cut from around one year down to five months, whereby the implementation of key parts of the new Manufacturing Execution System (MES) was reduced to two and half months. The new system and end-to-end digitalization of production enable conversion to “paperless documentation of production”, which can immediately fulfill all documentation requirements.

Ellevio, Sweden’s second largest grid company, has contracted Siemens Smart Infrastructure to deliver a new grid control system for its distribution network. The new grid control system based on Spectrum Power 7 will improve handling of increased network complexities, abnormalities, and security threats, whilst enabling improved ease and use for operators. Ellevio's control center in Karlstad is responsible for providing a reliable energy supply for 965,000 citizens in Sweden. The grid control is set up in a flexible multi-site operation with a main control center in Karlstad and a supporting control center in Stockholm for back-up.
- 2-loop fire control panel connects up to 252 devices
- EN 54-23 compliant alarm devices and dedicated peripherals
- Time-saving tools such as auto configuration and on-board web server
- License free programming
With the launch of the new version of the fire protection system, Cerberus FIT, Siemens Smart Infrastructure expands its offering for the small to medium-sized buildings market. Various small to medium-sized buildings can now be covered with a simple and cost-efficient solution. Cerberus FIT maximizes fire safety, thanks to greater functionality and enhanced productivity for those working on protecting the buildings. The intuitive interface as well as the auto configuration tool allow the technician to install, commission and maintain the system in a fast, easy and reliable way. With the delayed alarm function staff will be informed first to identify what an alarm is about in order to assess the situation. This ensures business continuity and reduces disturbances to occupants of smaller buildings such as small-to-medium sized hotels, kindergartens or nursing homes.
- Shorter development and commissioning times
- Software libraries enable standardization
- Commissioning tests on virtual test rack
The new Sinumerik One CNC generation is at the heart of digital transformation for machine tools. As a digital native, the controller features not only a new hardware platform, but also versatile software for the creation of a digital twin. It closes the gap between the virtual and the real world and helps to reduce development and commissioning times considerably.
- Continuous monitoring of energy consumption in the terminal building and at the shore power connecting points
- IoT data platform enables data storage in MindSphere and easy remote access
- Systematic energy data management ensures efficient operations
The Port of Kiel commissioned Siemens Smart Infrastructure to implement a cloud-based power monitoring solution for its shore power system. The shore power system, also from Siemens, will cover the electricity demand of all ships at the Ostseekai and Schwedenkai with green power while they are berthed at the Port of Kiel. This saves more than 8,000 tons of CO2 per year. The new power monitoring solution makes it possible to measure the energy consumption in the shore power operations building and at the Ostseekai and Schwedenkai connecting points, and store the data in MindSphere, the cloud-based IoT system from Siemens. The operators have access to all relevant electrical values at any time and from anywhere, allowing them to determine consumption, identify faults, avoid downtimes, and plan maintenance routines better.
