Jürgen Brandes (54) has been appointed CEO of Siemens’ Process Industries and Drives Division, effective October 1, 2015. He will succeed Peter Herweck (48), who is leaving the company at the end of the fiscal year. Brandes has been at Siemens for 25 years and is currently CEO of the company’s Mobility Management Business Unit. He previously held a variety of positions in Siemens’ automation and drives technology business both in and outside Germany.

On the fourth anniversary of its creation, during the Alliance Board meeting in Munich, Atos and Siemens decided to define new initiatives that would further expand their alliance. In particular, the two companies will, in the second half of this year, explore further opportunities for joint collaborations in the fields of advanced data analytics, cyber security and device connectivity.

Siemens is switching 9,000 street lights to LED technology in the U.S. city of Manchester in the State of New Hampshire. Some 4,500 lamps have already been refitted and the work should be completed by the end of September. Siemens will also be responsible for the required service and maintenance work. LED technology reduces power consumption by 60 percent and will bring the city considerable financial benefits, with annual savings of US$500,000 (over €450,000) in terms of energy and maintenance costs like replacing light bulbs.

The Velaro family of trains has won the coveted "Red Dot" design award for quality in recognition of the platform concept for high-speed trains that can be used to configure very different types of trains. Velaro combines aesthetic design with a high level of functionality.

The EU Commission has unconditionally approved Siemens' acquisition of Dresser-Rand. All regulatory approvals required to complete the transaction have thus now been obtained. Siemens plans to close the transaction by the end of June 2015. Siemens will pay all Dresser-Rand shareholders US$85.20 per share. The purchase price comprises the offer of US$83 per share plus a time-dependent ticking fee totaling US$2.20 per share for the months of March to and including June 2015. The overall consideration for acquiring all outstanding Dresser-Rand shares including the assumption of outstanding financial debt of US$1.2 billion is about US$7.8 billion.
Russian Railways (RZD) has awarded Siemens a maintenance contract for Desiro RUS type regional trains. Negotiations started already in 2011 when Siemens was awarded to produce the trains. The maintenance contract will run for 40 years.

The new electric bus route 55 between Lindholmen and Johanneberg in Gothenburg, Sweden, is now inaugurated. This nine-kilometer-route will be served by three all-electric buses and seven electric-hybrids, all from Volvo Buses. The vehicles are equipped with battery packs that will be charged with renewable electricity. Siemens, together with the communal energy supplier Göteborg Energi, has installed two high power charging stations, one at each end of the route, and supplied the complete charging system.
Digitalization is one of the worldwide trends that are increasingly impacting and changing people's lives and work. In particular, mobility within and between cities will be increasingly shaped by this development.
