Siemens Mobility has been awarded a €270 million contract by Sporveien AS in Oslo, Norway to install and maintain a Communications-Based Train Control system (CBTC) on the Oslo Metro. Siemens Mobility will completely replace the current legacy signalling with its digitalized CBTC technology which will provide greater automation and connectivity, allowing for a more efficient and centralized control of operations. Specifically, the optimization and renewal of the complete 94 km network will increase the availability, safety, and capacity of the Oslo Metro, while also equipping it to meet the future demands for mobility and the need for any potential expansions or upgrades. As part of this contract, Siemens Mobility will design, integrate, test, and commission the system, while also providing digital maintenance and support services for the CBTC system for 25 years.

Siemens Mobility and Stadtwerke München (SWM) successfully completed a one-year test of semiconductor technology based on silicon carbide (SiC) in an Avenio streetcar in Munich in August. They have now presented the results of their research. The study found that the motor noise produced by the vehicle fell sharply and that energy use declined as well during the trips that the tram made on Munich’s public-transportation rail network. The semiconductor technology was produced by Infineon Technologies. The tests were conducted as part of the European research and development project PINTA. By taking part in the trial, Siemens Mobility significantly contributed to efforts to integrate SiC power semiconductors into rail vehicles.

DB Regio Bayern and train manufacturer Siemens
Mobility will put a total of 57 new trains in service in Bavaria beginning in
December 2023. Twenty-six Desiro HC trains are currently being built for the
Franconia-South Thuringia network, along with 25 Desiro HC double-decker trains
and six Mireo trains for the Danube-Isar network. The 18 Desiro HC trains will
operate in the Franconia-South Thuringia network as four-car units beginning in
December 2023 and eight Desiro HC trains as six-car units in June 2024. They
travel almost as fast as the ICE, for example between Coburg and Erfurt at 190
kmh. In the Danube-Isar network, the 31 new trains will inaugurate service in
December 2024.

The
Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area will get the first battery-electric,
emission-free regional trains in late 2024 along with an improved and expanded timetable.
To provide this service, Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB), which again won the
contract for the network early in June, has ordered 31 two-car,
battery-operated Mireo Plus B trains from Siemens Mobility. The federal states
of Berlin and Brandenburg are responsible for planning and financing regional
rail passenger service in the VBB region.

Siemens Mobility and RazorSecure have signed a cooperation agreement to provide Rolling Stock operators worldwide with enhanced rail cybersecurity monitoring solutions. Increasing digitalization brings benefits, but also the need for adequate protection against cyber-attacks. Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Siemens Mobility have developed the world’s first train that operates by itself in rail traffic. Siemens Mobility has received an order to build 23 4-car Mireo trainsets for rail operator agilis Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of BeNEX GmbH. The trainsets will be delivered for the Regensburg/Danube Valley rail network in 2024 and are scheduled to enter passenger service in December that year. The Bavarian Railways Company (Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft or BEG), which plans, finances and controls regional and commuter rail operations on behalf of the state of Bavaria, had called for bids for new trains for parts of its network. The Mireo trains will serve on the new RE Line 50 (Nuremberg – Regensburg – Plattling) and the RB Line 51 (Neumarkt – Regensburg – Plattling).

Cargounit, the largest independent locomotive leasing company in Poland,
has ordered up to 30 Vectron MS locomotives from Siemens Mobility. The
framework agreement includes the delivery of ten units by the end of 2023 and
an option for 20 additional locomotives by 2024 as well as the maintenance of
the vehicles. The first two locomotives will be delivered this year. The
locomotives are planned for service in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia, the Netherlands and
optionally Romania and Bulgaria. The leasing company previously ordered six
locomotives from Siemens Mobility in 2018 and 2019. Cargounit’s Vectron fleet
could grow to 36 locomotives by 2024.
