Siemens, together with its Korean consortium partner Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. handed over into commercial operation the Shuweihat S3 combined cycle power plant (CCPP) in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The owner is Shuweihat Asia Power Company (SAPCO) which is a consortium comprising of Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, the Korea Electric Power Corporation and the local utility Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA). Shuweihat S3 has an installed electrical capacity of 1,600 megawatts, and will be operated by Shuweihat Asia O&M Company (SAOM). In addition to supporting increasing power demand from Abu Dhabi’s rapidly growing population, it will also deliver power to the emirate’s expanding industry including the nearby Ruwais refinery. Situated approximately 260 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi, Shuweihat S3 is Siemens’ fifth power plant in Abu Dhabi.

Siemens will supply the key components for a major combined-cycle power plant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The power station is designed to deliver electricity to the Jazan Industrial city area in the southwest of the country and to the refinery of
Jazan, which will additionally be supplied with process steam. The plant will be fueled with gasified refinery residues, which contributes greatly to the preservation of the country’s energy resources. With an installed capacity of 4,000 megawatts, Jazan will be the largest gasification-based power plant site in the world.
The contract is worth USD966.8 million.

The Smart Grid Division of Siemens has signed a contract with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to deliver two new SCADA systems to Nagaa-Hamadi and Samalout, located in Upper and Middle Egypt respectively. As part of a national plan to expand the power network in Upper Egypt, a consortium of Siemens Egypt, Siemens AG and
Sumitomo
will implement the latest version of the SCADA-EMS (Spectrum Power 7) software. The project is scheduled for completion within three years.

As part of further expansion to Qatar’s power supply system, Siemens has been awarded a contract valued at QAR 920 million (USD 253 million) by the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA). Siemens has announced that the Cool Clay team from the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, has won first place in the Siemens Student Award competi-tion. A panel of expert judges chose the winners from among four finalist teams se-lected for their efforts to tackle critical real-world challenges with innovative and ap-plicable solutions. The winners were announced during an awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi on February 12 in the attendance of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development.
