Our world is becoming increasingly digitalized – influencing everything from our communication with one another to the way we develop, produce and consume goods and services. The digitalization megatrend has not bypassed the rail sector. Siemens has kept pace here, too, and was exhibiting at the Innotrans 2016 with a focus on the digital transformation of rail transport.
In 2014, the Departments of Transportation of California, Illinois and Maryland ordered an initial lot of 34 Charger locomotives from Siemens, with an option for a total of 222 locomotives. The contract back then was valued at approximately €165 million ($225 million). Due to orders from other states as well as by the private rail operator All Aboard Florida, the total number of Chargers ordered amounts to 81 in 2017. The locomotives are deployed in corridors of the US states for regional and mainline trains travelling for Caltrains (California) as Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, in Washington as Amtrak Cascades and in Maryland with the regional network MARC. Under the "Brightline" brand, ten Chargers are being deployed in high-speed rail services between Miami and West Palm Beach; Orlando is due to follow at a later date.

The private railway company Lokomotion GmbH has placed an order with Siemens for eight Vectron type multisystem locomotives for operation in Germany, Austria and Italy. In addition to the train protection systems required for these countries the locomotives are to be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS). Delivery of the vehicles is scheduled to start in spring 2017. They have a maximum power output of 6,400 KW and a top speed of 200 km/h. These locomotives are to be deployed in cross-border traffic between Germany and Italy.
Siemens is supplying eight Vectron DC type locomotives for operation in Italy. The DB Schenker Rail freight operator has a leasing contract for the locomotives with Unicredit Leasing GmbH. The vehicles are to be put into service from late 2016 onwards. With a maximum power of 5,200 KW, the top speed attained is 160 km/h.

PKP Cargo, the Polish logistics operator and rail freight carrier, has placed an order with Siemens for the delivery of 15 Vectron type multisystem locomotives. Besides the provision of spare parts and maintenance for a period of eight years, the order includes an option for five more Vectrons.

The Swiss rail cargo specialist BLS Cargo has ordered 15 Vectron MS multisystem locomotives from Siemens that will be used in cross-border service in Germany (D), Austria (A), Switzerland (CH), Italy (I) and the Netherlands (NL). All traction and train control systems required for the north-south freight corridor are on board. The locomotive can reach speeds up to 200 km/h and has an output of 6,400 kW. Delivery will take place in three phases, and the first locomotives are scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2016.
By the year 2050, an estimated 70 percent of the world's population will be living in cities. As a result, there will be an increasingly urgent need to provide efficient mobility solutions for the residents. At the bi-annual Global Public Transport Summit, the Siemens Mobility Division was again be represented this year with intelligent mobility solutions. From May 15 to 17, 2017, at booth (SK100) on Level 02 of the Conference Center, Siemens was showcasing integrated and sustainable transport solutions which help to get the best out of existing infrastructures – using not only state-of-the-art hardware but also intelligent management systems. This is the only way to deliver future-proof mobility services in the face of rising energy costs, limited space and growing demands. Digitalization of proven transport solutions plays a key role in achieving this goal, as it allows availability and passenger comfort to be improved and throughput to be maximized.
