For the first time ever, an industrial product has been certified for the United States
after parts of the required tests were conducted through digital simulation. That
simulation was verified and validated with physical testing. This remarkable
achievement is a global first in a national safety-certification process. To make this
advance possible, Siemens collaborated with UL Solutions, an esteemed global
leader in applied safety science. The result is a testimony to the remarkable
accuracy and reliability of modern digital twin simulations. It marks a step forward
into a future in which digital twins and the industrial metaverse streamlines product
development, enhances innovation, safety and accelerates time-to-market.
As the global population experiences rapid growth, more people around the world are moving from the countryside to the city. In addition to the inner-city challenges posed by the urbanization megatrend, there is also an increase in the average traveling distance. As a result, the challenges for train systems are also increasing. To meet these demands, Siemens Mobility and Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) have jointly developed new auxiliary converters to improve the efficiency of on-board power systems using power semiconductors based on silicon carbide (SiC).

Siemens is presenting the Simotics SD motor series as part of the Digital Enterprise Virtual Experience at the Hannover Messe 2021. The standard version of Simotics SD is offered in the efficiency class Super Premium Efficiency (IE4) across the entire power spectrum from 2.2 to 1,000 kW and for the number of poles 2, 4, as well as from 75 kW for 6 poles and from 55 kW for 8 poles. Simotics SD in IE4 thus exceeds the so-called ErP Directive 2019/1781 (energy-related products) – both the first stage, which will be valid by July 2021, as well as the next, which will apply from July 2023. The directive defines the eco-design requirements for electric motors and speed control systems.

Siemens is extending its Simogear portfolio with a new synchronous-reluctance drive system consisting of Simogear standard gear unit, Simotics reluctance motor and a Sinamics frequency converter for controlling speed. The solution has an output range from 0.55 to 4 kilowatts and is available for Sinamics G110M, G120D, G120 and S120 converters. Its efficiency class is comparable to IE4 and it is particularly impressive when operating under partial load when compared to asynchronous motors due to its greater efficiency and lower losses. In addition, the drive system is characterized by high dynamics due to the low moment of inertia and optimized control. Commissioning is also quick and easy – simply enter the motor code into the converter. An external fan is not required due to the constant torque/speed curve up to the nominal speed and the drive system is certificated to CE, UL/CSA and CCC is in preparation.

A consortium led by Siemens Gas and Power (Siemens Energy) has been awarded a turnkey contract for two converter stations for the Greek high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link that will connect Crete, Greece’s largest and most populous island, with the mainland of Greece. The project will enable an exchange of electricity of up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) to enhance reliability of the power supply and facilitate integration of renewable energy sources in the power grid. Customer is Ariadne Interconnection S.P.S.A., a wholly owned entity of the Greek independent power transmission operator IPTO. Commissioning of the interconnector is scheduled for mid-2023. Total order volume for the consortium is €370 million.
