Siemens
today inaugurated a new Research and Development (R&D) facility in the
presence of Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin, Canton Zug Government
Councilor Silvia Thalmann-Gut and Roland Busch, the President and CEO of
Siemens AG, to mark the completion of its CHF250 million investment and the
seven-year construction of its climate-neutral campus in Zug, Switzerland.

As part of its 10-year strategic plan, ‘Transformation Morgan
2030: Leading the Future,’ Baltimore-based Morgan State University (MSU) has
partnered with Siemens on its journey to becoming a smart and connected campus
of the future. Improvements currently underway include implementing a series of
modernization upgrades to the university’s heating, ventilation, and air
conditioning (HVAC), security, and fire and life safety systems with a focus on
energy efficiency, resiliency and sustainability. All work is umbrellaed under
a master service agreement between Maryland Clean Energy Center, Siemens and
MSU to support the university’s campus transformation.
The University of
Birmingham, in partnership with Siemens, is combining digital sensor and
analytics technologies, artificial intelligence, decentralized energy
generation and storage, renewable energy and concepts that help change users’
behaviour to transform the university’s Edgbaston and Dubai campuses into the
world’s smartest global campus, creating a ‘Living Lab’ where research,
teaching and learning all benefit from access to new data and
connectivity.

Siemens AG inaugurated its new campus in Zug on December 5th. The Siemens Zug campus features a new office building with 1,000 work spaces and a newly constructed production building. The investment volume for new buildings, renovations and related measures amounts to CHF 250 million. The campus is the international headquarters of the Siemens Building Technologies (BT) Division, which has 29,000 employees. Last year it posted worldwide sales of 6.6 billion euros. As Siemens reference projects, the buildings feature innovative building technology.

Siemens Mobility is launching a field test for autonomous driving at the Siemens campus in Munich-Perlach, Germany. Working with partners IAV GmbH, Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) e.V., emm Solutions GmbH, UTB Projektmanagement GmbH and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Siemens Mobility is initiating a research project and field test. The test route runs through the campus and enables traffic simulation in a variety of real-life situations.

The "Siemens Campus in Erlangen," which is being planned as Siemens' largest location worldwide, will be built according to the design drafted by the architecture firm KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten of Frankfurt, Germany. This decision was made today in Erlangen by the jury comprised of high-caliber stakeholder representatives and experts from related fields. "We're building the Siemens Campus in Erlangen to provide a home to top researchers from all over the world. When the political, business and scientific communities work hand in hand, that's the best investment in Germany's future as an innovation hub," said Joe Kaeser, President and CEO of Siemens AG, during the announcement in Erlangen. "The urban development design implements our objective of creating a campus of the future that will benefit our customers and employees, but also the entire area, over the long term," said Kaeser.

At its meeting yesterday, Erlangen City Council approved a decision of principle giving the go-ahead for an architectural design competition for the new Siemens Campus in Erlangen. This marked a further milestone for the project, which is important not only to the city but to the entire metropolitan region of Erlangen / Nuremberg.

The state of Bavaria and the city of Erlangen have pledged their support for the planning and construction of the new Siemens Campus Erlangen. After a study initiated some months ago by Siemens confirmed the feasibility of the €500-million project, Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer, Erlangen's mayor Siegfried Balleis, Siemens President and CEO Joe Kaeser and Siemens Chief Financial Officer Ralf P. Thomas signed declarations of intent relating to the project at a ceremony held in Munich's Prinz-Carl-Palais. "By relocating our business units to a modern campus in Erlangen we are underscoring Siemens' long-term commitment to this greater metropolitan area. Together with the state of Bavaria and the city of Erlangen we have succeeded in creating attractive guidelines for this forward-looking project, which will benefit the population of the region and the state as well as our own employees," said Joe Kaeser. In a next step, specifications will be defined for a design competition.
