- Storage enabled intelligent microgrid concept to accelerate decarbonization and significantly increase renewables share
- Energy storage system enables greater energy independence
- Frequency regulation increases Madeira’s grid resilience
- Plant to provide blackstart capability to the 60 kV level
Siemens Smart
Infrastructure, in partnership with Fluence, are working to help the Portuguese
island of Madeira gain greater energy independence and grid resilience using
renewable energy. Madeira’s energy provider, Empresa de Electricidade da
Madeira (EEM), awarded a Siemens and Fluence consortium a contract to install a
22,5 MVA / 15,6 MVh battery storage plant which will be integrated into an
islanded microgrid concept.
The project will enable
EEM to optimize its renewable energy integration, significantly contributing to
increasing the share of renewable power to around 50 percent in its energy mix.
As a result, the island can reduce its fuel consumption over the next two to
three years, while gaining
greater energy independence without
affecting energy quality or grid stability.
- End-to-end automation and digitalization of all process steps enables the industrialization of additive manufacturing
- Simulation and digital twins help to test and implement profitability and scalability
- Individual financing models lower investment hurdle and time-to-market
- Carbon footprint to be reduced by up to 58 percent with additively manufactured eyewear
Siemens enables the
start-up You Mawo in offering bespoke eyeglass frames in such a way that they
are accessible, affordable, and sustainable for a broad market and You Mawo can
have them produced in an economically cost-effective and responsible way. The
customization process considers parameters such as design, a perfect fit for
the person wearing the glasses, and color.
- ‘The power
reset’ now available on Amazon Prime Video in 3 countries
- Documentary narrates the story of Wunsiedel in Germany and the
positive impact of its energy transition on residents and the environment
‘The power reset: A town creating the
energy blueprint for the world’, a new documentary
film produced by Siemens, has just launched on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S.,
U.K. and Germany. The film narrates the story of Wunsiedel, a small town in the
German region of Bavaria, and its inspiring energy transition journey. The town
of around 10,000 people has successfully created a distributed energy system based
exclusively on renewable sources and enhanced with digital technology, making
it a lighthouse project for a sustainable energy future.
Cities account for roughly 80 percent of the energy consumed worldwide and generate roughly 75 percent of all carbon emissions. With more than two-thirds of the world’s population predicted to live in urban areas by 2050, cities are coming under increasing pressure. Digitally connected smart cities can help overcome some of the most pressing challenges of our time, including clean water, adequate waste removal as well as reduced pollution caused by buildings. The Expo 2020 Dubai site, with infrastructure connected by Siemens digital technology, provides a blueprint for smart cities globally. As the Premier Partner for Infrastructure Digitalization at Expo 2020 Dubai, Siemens has digitally linked more than 130 buildings at a purpose-built site twice the size of Monaco.
- Westnetz GmbH expands Bekond substation with SF6-free 24 kV panel
- Climate-neutral insulation gas Clean Air to substitute fluorine gases
- User-friendly compatibility between existing plant and latest environmentally friendly technology from blue GIS portfolio
In cooperation with Siemens Smart Infrastructure, E.ON
subsidiary Westnetz, one of Germany's largest distribution grid operators, has expanded
its Bekond substation in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate with a fluorine
gas-free NXPLUS C 24 circuit-breaker panel. It is the
first panel of its type in the world to go into operation using Clean Air, the
climate-neutral insulation gas. This installation demonstrates the
functionality of fluorine gas-free solutions in grid operations and shows an
easy way to extend existing technology with the latest environmentally
friendly technology.
- Both companies kick off developments to ensure quality and trust in
a machine-to-machine (M2M) connected world
- The aim is to provide instant accessibility to quality and safety
information with a single source of truth to enable disruptive business models
- Anchoring physical products in the digital world using smart
contracts, blockchain and industrial edge
Merck
KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, a leading science and technology company, and
Siemens, an innovation leader in automation and digitalization, Germany, plan

- Company to provide EnergyIP meter data management system for 1.2 million smart meters
- 10-year contract includes service and maintenance
- Software to help reduce electricity consumption by up to 6 percent, power loss by more than 10 percent
Siemens Smart
Infrastructure and its partners, Sagemcom and Bitė Lietuva, are participating
in the rollout of 1.2 million smart meters across Lithuania. Siemens will
provide Lithuanian distribution system operator ESO with the EnergyIP meter
data management system as well as service and maintenance for 10 years.
Sagemcom is supplying the 1.2 million smart meters and the Siconia head-end
system, which reads the data generated by the meters. Bitė Lietuva, a telecommunications
provider in Lithuania, is the partner for communication technology. The new
smart meter infrastructure enables ESO to reduce electricity consumption by up
to 6 percent, cut power losses in the overall supply network by over 10
percent, and lead to higher energy efficiency in the overall operations.
