- 137th ICE 4 christened “Spree” at the Berlin Central Station
- Fleet expansion continues: DB will take delivery of a new ICE every three weeks on average this year
(Berlin, March 19, 2024) With the delivery of
the 137th train, the ICE 4 fleet of Deutsche Bahn (DB) is now
complete. The punctually delivered train was christened “Spree” in Berlin
today. Richard Lutz, CEO of DB, Volker Wissing, Federal
Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, Manja Schreiner, Senator for
Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment in Berlin, Michael
Peterson, DB Member of the Management Board for Long Distance Passenger
Transport, and Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens AG, took part in the official
naming ceremony at the Berlin Central Station. The 7-car ICE 4 was christened
with water from the Spree River in Berlin. Manufacturer Siemens Mobility has delivered 137 ICE 4 trains in three
different variants since 2016 – totaling over 1,500 cars with around 105,000
seats. Today’s ceremony marked the completion of the largest procurement
program in DB’s history.
- Premiere of the new locomotive generation at DB Cargo
- Siemens Mobility's new dual-mode locomotive makes rail transport more efficient, faster, and digital
- Around 150 "Vectron Dual Mode light" locomotives will enable CO2-free supply chains right down to the last mile
A new generation of locomotives has been unveiled that will make DB
Cargo's fleet more efficient and powerful in the future. The “Vectron Dual Mode
light” combines electric and diesel drive for adaptability in freight
transportation. The modern hybrid locomotive can easily switch between electric
and diesel operations. It helps avoid time-consuming shunting and maneuvering, and
can be used flexibly, with or without overhead lines.
- Siemens
Mobility to replace its current rail infrastructure site in Chippenham, Wiltshire
with a state-of-the-art factory, digital engineering, and R&D facility.
- The
new factory is expected to be operational by 2026, strategically positioned to
meet the growing demand in rail technology.
- Approx.
800 local manufacturing, research, engineering, and support staff will
transition to the new site.
Siemens Mobility is investing
€115 million to establish a cutting-edge rail infrastructure manufacturing,
digital engineering and research & development (R&D) center in
Chippenham, UK. This investment highlights the commitment to innovation,
sustainability, excellence, and meeting the growing demand for rail
infrastructure in Britain and worldwide. The new facility, set to replace the
existing factory in 2026, will be vital for Siemens Mobility's future projects in rail technology, providing
an efficient site to build the next generation of conventional and digital rail
signaling and control systems for Britain. The transition, including the
transfer of all local staff, totaling approximately 800, will not cause any interruption
in production.
- Ultra-fast, multifunctional, parametrizable, and sustainable
- Up to 1,000 times faster, plus wear-free switching
- Multiple functions in one device; each can be adjusted individually
- Up to 80 percent less space required in distribution board, compared to
conventional solutions
Siemens has developed one of the world’s most
innovative circuit protection devices with cutting-edge electronic switching technology.
SENTRON ECPD (Electronic Circuit Protection Device) electronically switches off
circuit faults if errors occur and, if necessary, trips the mechanical
isolating contact downstream. Up to now, disconnection was handled purely
through electro-mechanical elements. “This innovation offers a variety of
benefits and has the potential to revolutionize today’s circuit protection world,”
said Andreas Matthé, CEO of Electrical Products at Siemens Smart
Infrastructure.

- Siemens’ next generation grid management software, Gridscale X™ DER Insights, supports goal to achieve net-zero emissions in the US by 2050
- The software provides better visibility of behind the meter distributed energy resources (DERs) and their impact on the grid
- These insights are critical for better grid planning and asset health, and
ensuring the success of customer programs
- Gridscale X DER Insights is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio
Siemens has announced its latest Gridscale X software offering enabling distribution utilities
to gain better visibility and insights of distributed energy resources (DERs) behind the meter
to increase grid capacity. With the rising number of DERs, this causes operational
challenges for distribution networks not originally designed to operate with these resources.
Gaining insights into where they are and how DERs are operating is a critical first step in
addressing the problems and subsequently taking advantage of these resources for grid
optimization.
