Siemens, a leading
technology company, today announced a breakthrough in the longstanding
challenge of closely managing numerous hardware control points throughout the
factory. The solution is the new Siemens Simatic Automation
Workstation, which allows manufacturers to replace a hardware PLC, a
conventional HMI and an edge device with a single, software-based workstation.
This ushers in Information Technology (IT) workflows to Operational Technology
(OT) environments.

Siemens will be presenting
a complete virtual programmable logic controller (PLC) for the first time at
Hannover Messe 2023. The Simatic S7-1500V expands the existing Simatic
portfolio and meets special market requirements such as virtual hosting of PLC
computing. In the future, that means the range will include both hardware
controllers and the virtual PLC. The new Simatic S7-1500V is part of Industrial
Operations X. This is a continuously growing, interoperable portfolio geared
towards production engineering, execution, and optimization which Siemens is
adding to its portfolios on Siemens Xcelerator – the open, digital business
platform. With Industrial Operations X, Siemens is consistently integrating IT
and software capabilities into the world of automation, thus speeding up the
transition from automated to highly adaptable production. After all, volatile
markets, the labor shortage, and an increasing scarcity of resources all mean
industrial firms have to structure their automated production more flexibly.

In a project that will run until the end of 2024, Siemens
and 16 partners will facilitate advances in the driverless operation of
regional trains with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI). Within the “safe.trAIn”
project, which the German government is subsidizing, there is a budget of €23 million
available for this task. Solutions for meeting the requirements in this highly
regulated and standardized environment have the potential to substantially boost
the efficiency and sustainability of regional railway transportation.

Siemens introduces
Industrial Operations X, an open and interoperable portfolio for automating and
operating industrial production. The new portfolio is part of Siemens Xcelerator,
the open digital business platform comprising a portfolio of software and
connected hardware, an ecosystem of partners, and a marketplace.

Continental’s tire division and Siemens have signed a
strategic supplier agreement. As Siemens announces on the sidelines of the Tire
Expo trade fair in Hannover (Germany), the company will supply automation and
drive technology for Continental’s tire factories worldwide in its capacity as
a preferred supplier. The aim of the cooperation is to further optimize
Continental's global tire production with innovative control and automation
technology. As part of the agreement, standards will be established which will
help Continental make its production machinery even more efficient throughout
their lifecycles.

At the SPS trade fair
in Nuremberg from November 8 to 10, Siemens will present Version 18 of its
engineering framework TIA Portal (Totally Integration Automation Portal). If
industrial companies are to shorten their time-to-market, counteract the lack
of skilled workers, and remain competitive, they need efficient automation
engineering that can be quickly modified to meet new requirements. That’s why
the new version of the TIA Portal once again boosts engineering efficiency and
offers optimized functionalities for multi-user engineering. This means that
users can now work in teams and in parallel on projects and build and manage
shared libraries. Access rights can be assigned either individually or
group-specifically, which makes collaboration more flexible.

At this year's EMO, Siemens is expanding its range of products and services with the "Digital Native" CNC Sinumerik One. The new CNC generation from Siemens, which was launched on the market in 2019, comes with numerous innovations in software and hardware. With the new Sinumerik software version V6.22, there are new technology functions for the Sinumerik One that increase transparency in the machine, simplify operation, reduce machine wear, and increase performance. This leads to the optimal use of available resources, for example by reducing scrap and repairs. It also helps to increase machine productivity by minimizing idle and production times, for example.

The
Braunschweig site of Siemens Mobility, the world’s largest and oldest
development and production site for signaling and rail automation technologies,
is celebrating its 150th anniversary today. Guests attending the event include Volker
Wissing, the Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, Olaf Lies, the
Lower Saxony Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Housing and
Digitalization, and Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens AG. Founded by Braunschweig
businessman Max Jüdel and mechanical engineer Heinrich Büssing in 1873, the
factory was taken over in stages by Siemens in the following decades. Innovations
from Braunschweig have consistently shaped the development of railway
infrastructure worldwide. Today, Siemens Mobility continues to research and
develop technology at its Braunschweig facility that makes rail infrastructure
more efficient, sustainable, and reliable.

Two industry leaders in
machine vision and industrial image processing are independently joining forces
with Siemens. As a result of the new partnerships, customers will be able to integrate
machine vision applications directly into their existing automation technology.
By combining their respective strengths, portfolios, and experience, it will be
possible to offer plug-and-play machine vision solutions – aligned portfolio of
automation and machine vision components consisting of hardware and software.

Siemens Mobility will upgrade the
first section of Finland's rail network under the Finnish government's
"Digirail project", which involves renewing the country's train control system. The contract was
recently awarded and includes the installation of the European Train Control
System Levels 2 [ETCS L2] and the Hybrid Train Detection [HTD] for the first
time in Finland on the 191-kilometer stretch between Lielahti and Rauma-Pori. This marks another milestone in the
implementation of Siemens
Mobility's latest interlocking and radio block center technology on the new DS3
platform, which is entirely based on commercial-off-the-shelf [COTS] hardware. The
new train control system aims to increase the network's capacity, improve
punctuality, minimize disruptions, and enhance the safety of operation. It will
pave the way for a more sustainable, efficient, and safe railway network and is
expected to be in commercial service by 2027.
