Mireo – the new regional and commuter train platform from Siemens
Cities and urban centers are creaking under the strain of their ever-increasing population density. Even today, traffic on city streets crawls along at less than 20 kilometers an hour. No wonder, then, that so many people are turning to public regional and urban mass transit. Operators have their work cut out if they are to meet the growing demand for mobility. Mireo, the new regional and commuter platform from Siemens, has been developed specifically to fulfill these needs. As a scalable articulated train featuring bogies with inside bearings, it uses less energy. And thanks to improved aerodynamics, it is considerably more lightweight than predecessor models. The vehicle concept provides for different car body lengths and train configurations, from two to seven-part trainsets with train lengths of between 50 and 140 meters. Trains can achieve maximum speeds of 140 to 200 kilometers an hour. DB Regio was the first regional transport operator to take advantage of the new platform, commissioning Siemens in March 2017 to supply 24 Mireos for the Rheintal network.

The components of the Mireo are installed only under the floor or on the roof wherever possible. This maximizes the space available for passengers, which can also accommodate bicycles, prams and wheelchairs if required.

DB Regio orders 39 regional multiple units from Siemens for the Rhine Valley network
South-west Germany is counting on Siemens: from 2020 onward, DB Regio AG will be operating its Rhine Valley rail network exclusively with new trains from Siemens. The German Railways order covers 15 Desiro HC and 24 Mireo trains in total, and goes hand in hand with a restructuring of the rail transport services in the Rhine Valley. There is a clear separation between a rapid train system for fast cross-regional services and a regional suburban rail system (S-Bahn) with stops at all stations. The Mireo will be deployed as a regional train (RB) service along the line section from Offenburg via Freiburg to Basel/Neuenburg (Switzerland) as well as in the Kaiserstuhl area on Sundays between Freiburg and Endingen/Breisach. The line section from Karlsruhe via Offenburg and Freiburg to Basel (Switzerland) will be operated with the Desiro HC as a regional express service.

Siemens Mobility receives first order for battery-powered trains
Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW) has ordered 20 Mireo Plus B trains from Siemens Mobility. The two-car electric trainsets with 120 seats can operate on rail routes with or without overhead power lines thanks to their battery hybrid drive, and are scheduled to operate in Network 8 of the Ortenau regional system. The contract also includes maintenance of the trains by Siemens Mobility for a period of just under 30 years.

The vehicle is conceived as a scalable articulated train. All technical components are installed either beneath the floor or on the roof, so that every single centimeter of the interior space can be used to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. The three-car trains have over 220 seats and a sufficient number of multipurpose areas.

"Only slightly over one year after signing the contract, the first Mireo trains planned for service in the Rhine Valley are already in production. It is already the second order after the product's launch in the summer of 2016. Now the Mireo will also serve the Rhine-Neckar network as a regional and commuter train. This change will be possible following an agreement signed by the responsible authorities Zweckverband Nahverkehr Rheinland (NVR), Zweckverband Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Nord (SPNV-Nord) and Zweckverband Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Süd (SPNV Süd) with the leasing firm Alpha Trains and rail operator TransRegio Deutsche Regionalbahn (TransRegio) to expand the existing fleet with six new Mireo trains from manufacturer Siemens Mobility.
