Infrastructure has integrated new electrical planning features into TIA
Selection Tool, the Siemens configuration and ordering software. This makes
electrical pre-planning completely digital. Now, electrical planners can design
and dimension the main electrical components of a machine quickly, easily, and
in accordance with IEC and UL standards. This reduces the required effort to
perform the task, minimizes potential error sources, and helps machine and
control panel builders improve their competitiveness. TIA Selection Tool is
designed to make it easy and convenient to configure and select all components
of industrial control panels. By integrating the new features, the tool allows
users to design electrical as well as mechanical and automation components
using one set of data and one platform. This lays the foundation for
significantly more efficient development processes, faster lead times, and
smarter electrification solutions for industrial environments.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure has installed process bus technology at the new high-voltage substation in Los Sauces for one of the largest Peruvian distribution network operators, Luz del Sur. This process bus installation with Siprotec merging units and Siprotec protection devices is one of the first fully digitized energy automation system in operation. The new technology sets benchmarks with its future-proof design and will help optimize the entire operation of the power grid.

In a move that brings new market opportunities for industrial players, Siemens has developed a unique business model to support the next level of energy optimization for Finnish brewery Sinebrychoff, a subsidiary of the international Carlsberg Group. At the heart of the solution, which will be implemented at Sinebrychoff’s plant in greater Helsinki, is a virtual power plant (VPP) and the latest energy storage technology, supported with financing solutions, to create one of the first examples of power flexibility in an industrial site.

Siemens Smart infrastructure is continually expanding its portfolio for climate-neutral power distribution. In the medium-voltage switchgear of the blue portfolio, the company has completely eliminated fluorine-based gas mixtures (F-gases) while retaining the compact design and safe, proven operation. An innovative load-break switch equipped with a special vacuum interrupter is the new centerpiece for F-gas-free medium-voltage applications in secondary distribution grids from 12 to 24 kV.

Siemens, the regional utility Allgäuer Überlandwerk (AÜW) and their project
partners are developing a local electricity market using blockchain technology.
Today, the parties launched pebbles’ electricity trading platform, bringing
them one step closer to creating the first local marketplace for optimized
electricity trading based on blockchain. The platform will be utilized in in
the town of Wildpoldsried in the Bavarian Allgäu region of Germany. Now, during
the platform’s demonstration phase, private producers can use an app to market
their electricity directly to local consumers without going through marketers
or traditional grid operators. The market platform also supports flexible power
from battery storage or controllable loads such as heat pumps or charging
stations for electric vehicles. The blockchain technology, which forms the
basis for managing market transactions, is designed to create end-to-end
transparency and trust between users.

In conjunction with their ongoing research
cooperation, Siemens Smart Infrastructure and Netze BW GmbH, headquartered in
Stuttgart, have co-developed an intelligent and environmentally-friendly distribution
substation. For the first time, the new station combines the F-gas-free 24
kilovolt (kV) ring main unit (RMU) from the Siemens blue GIS portfolio with a
630 kilovolt-ampere (kVA) distribution grid transformer. Instead of mineral
oil, the Eco Design 2-certified transformer uses fully biodegradable, natural
bio-ester oil for insulation. The integrated automation system from the Siemens’
Sicam portfolio is designed for the special requirements of distributed grids
and enables reliable monitoring and control of the grid. The innovative
substation, which will connect the medium-voltage distribution grid and the
low-voltage local grid in the town of Kreuzthal in the Oberallgäu region, is now
being tested under real-life conditions.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure has teamed up with Toutenkamion Group to jointly develop an agile container system of highly innovative mobile intensive care units, designed to take pressure off hospital infrastructure. The solution was a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced nursing staff, doctors and hospital managers to urgently come up with practical solutions to ensure adequate care was provided to extremely contagious patients, while maintaining other emergency and conventional care. One of the major challenges of the epidemic has been the need to equip and increase the number of resuscitation and intensive care beds.

Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), Siemens Smart Infrastructure and Siemens Financial Services (SFS) today announced the formation of Calibrant Energy (Calibrant), a joint venture that offers comprehensive onsite Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) solutions at no up-front cost for its customers, which include corporate and industrial clients, as well as municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals.

With the new 3WA series, Siemens Smart Infrastructure is updating its Sentron portfolio of air circuit breakers. As a core element of low-voltage switchboards, they reliably protect electrical installations in buildings, infrastructures and industrial facilities from damage caused by short circuits, ground faults or overload faults. At the same time, the new 3WA circuit breakers meet all low-voltage power distribution requirements in digital environments. They support software-based planning and engineering, digital testing and monitoring, and seamless integration in automation and IoT systems. For the first time, upgrades can be completed 100 percent digitally. Users simply download new features from the Internet and add them using an app.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure and WUN H2 GmbH
signed a contract to build one of the largest hydrogen production plants in
Germany. It will be built in Wunsiedel in the north of Bavaria. With a power
intake of six megawatts in the initial development phase, the plant will run
solely on renewable energy and will be CO2-free. The electrolysis
plant from Siemens Energy will have the capacity to produce over 900 tons of
hydrogen per year in this first phase. When fully expanded, it will be able to
supply up to 2,000 tons. Groundbreaking is scheduled for the end of this year
and commissioning at the end of 2021.
