- Grid edge estimated to be crucial to tackle the energy transition
- Assessment of grid edge readiness and need for 36 countries worldwide
- Results provide valuable insights for governments and industries alike
In the effort to mitigate climate change, global energy markets are changing for good. Energy generation is increasingly relying on renewables, and formerly passive consumers are becoming active prosumers. For this energy turnaround to succeed, the grid edge – the interface between energy supply and energy demand – is more important than ever. Grid edge technologies are crucial to support the energy transformation. They encompass a wide range of technologies, from electric vehicles to heat pumps, solar panels, and smart meters to apps which allow remote control of appliances.
- Research projects with volume of €1.7 million and term of 30 months
- Studies of highest automation levels in regional and mainline transport
- Important impetus for digitizing railways
Siemens Mobility and prominent partners have won two innovative research projects from the German Center for Rail Traffic Research (DZSF) to study the safety of automated rail operations. The aim is to define the criteria needed for approving fully automated regional and mainline rail service. The two projects will be funded with €1.7 million and are scheduled to run for 30 months.
- TIA Selection Tool enables mechanical, electrical and automation planning on a single platform
- Complete standards know-how for electrical planning integrated in one software program
- Time-saving dimensioning of protection and switching devices, including essential design calculations
With “Control Panel Design” Siemens Smart
Infrastructure has integrated new electrical planning features into TIA
Selection Tool, the Siemens configuration and ordering software. This makes
electrical pre-planning completely digital. Now, electrical planners can design
and dimension the main electrical components of a machine quickly, easily, and
in accordance with IEC and UL standards. This reduces the required effort to
perform the task, minimizes potential error sources, and helps machine and
control panel builders improve their competitiveness. TIA Selection Tool is
designed to make it easy and convenient to configure and select all components
of industrial control panels. By integrating the new features, the tool allows
users to design electrical as well as mechanical and automation components
using one set of data and one platform. This lays the foundation for
significantly more efficient development processes, faster lead times, and
smarter electrification solutions for industrial environments.
- Siemens Mobility supplying the complete system technology for C-ITS in Austria
- C-ITS allows for exchange of information between vehicles and the road via ITS-G5 broadcast technology
- ASFiNAG is the first infrastructure provider in Europe to install C-ITS
Siemens Mobility is pleased to announce that it is
partnering with ASFiNAG, the operating authority for the Austrian highway network,
to provide the technology for an intelligent traffic
management system that facilitates the exchange of safety information between
vehicles and the road. The “Cooperative Intelligent Transport System”
(C-ITS) is a next generation traffic management system that uses
broadcast technology to analyze roadway conditions and disseminates information
to motorists relating to traffic jams, accidents, and lane
closures. ASFiNAG is the first infrastructure
provider in Europe to reach the milestone of installing a network connecting
the vehicle and road. The process of implementing the system across 2,200
kilometers of highway and expressway in Austria has already started.
- Process bus significantly increases level of digitalization in substations
- Faster installation and commissioning
- Improved system reliability
- Benchmark for future-proof design
Siemens Smart Infrastructure has installed process bus technology at the new high-voltage substation in Los Sauces for one of the largest Peruvian distribution network operators, Luz del Sur. This process bus installation with Siprotec merging units and Siprotec protection devices is one of the first fully digitized energy automation system in operation. The new technology sets benchmarks with its future-proof design and will help optimize the entire operation of the power grid.
Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) and Siemens Mobility – GRK Rail
Consortium signs a large-scale contract to modernize the railways in Estonia.
Estonian Railways has initiated a very ambitious investment plan which
will take the service quality, traffic management and safety of its rail infrastructure
to a new level by 2030. Between 2020 and 2024 it plans to upgrade the safety
systems on six lines of the rail network and upgrade approximately 50 stations
across the country. To deliver this modernization of the rail safety systems
(CCS), the contract is worth over € 115 million.
The agreement on modernizing the safety systems paves the way for
migrating the entire rail network to the European signalling standard, the
European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS / ETCS) in the future. The
agreement relates to the first and second phases of the modernization plan.
Migrating to ERTMS/ETCS is subject to the third phase.
