In the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Siemens today held the groundbreaking ceremony in Berlin for one of Europe’s largest urban development projects: Siemensstadt Square. The project is a blueprint for the effective design of urban brownfield development projects and industrial transformation worldwide. Siemens CEO Roland Busch, Digital Industries CEO Cedrik Neike and media representatives, among others, were present at the ceremony.

What is Siemensstadt Square?

With an area of roughly 188 acres and floorspace of more than a million square meters, Siemensstadt Square will provide housing and workplaces for around 35,000 people. Digital technologies from the entire Siemens Xcelerator platform – from an end-to-end digital twin to artificial intelligence (AI) – will make the district livable and fit for the future. Siemens itself is investing €750 million – its largest-ever single investment in Berlin and a strong commitment to Germany as an industrial location.

The beginnings of Siemensstadt: building for the future

At the end of the 19th century, Siemens & Halske chose a patch of wilderness for its new production site. It also built up research installations, residential settlements and social and cultural facilities, thus creating a new urban district: Siemensstadt.

The beginnings of Siemensstadt 

As early as the first drafted concept for Siemensstadt in 1897, the Siemens visionaries combined modern, company-owned housing with the local working environment. Cultural and social facilities such as churches, schools, recreational facilities and parks were always integral. We aim to continue and further develop this over 100-year-old tradition!
