Siemens supplies DB Energie with software to modernize their transmission grid operations

Siemens to deliver future-proof grid control software to DB Energie
Besides Spectrum Power 7, the scope includes a
range of applications and optimization functions, a fully integrated data
warehouse for long-term archiving, necessary hardware such as server and
network components, dedicated training systems, as well as the planning
software PSS®SINCAL as part of Siemens Gridscale X. Meeting the latest security
requirements will be ensured through continuous system updates. The comprehensive solution will allow DB Energie to
efficiently operate its complex private transmission grid consisting of
approximately 16,000 km of traction power lines, 200 high-voltage switchgear
and around 50 generator units. The new control system is expected to be
operational in 2028.
Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens
Grid Software, said: “We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with DB
Energie, supporting them to address the complexities of grid management with
our technology. Ensuring a resilient and safe power supply is essential for the
German railway network.”
The project is based on a long-term partnership
with DB Energie. In January 2025, Siemens replaced the grid controller at DB
Energie to enhance reliability and secure grid operations. The controller
ensures that all grid generator units are used optimally to keep the voltage
and frequency on a constant level and to guarantee cost-efficient energy supply.
The deployment also aligns with Deutsche Bahn’s
ambitious target to become climate neutral by 2040 through initiatives such as
expanding green electricity, phasing out diesel and transitioning heating.
