Siemens launches the open Industrial Edge Ecosystem

The new offering makes it possible for B2B customers to purchase and operate multiple software components on an all-in-one platform. In the Industrial Edge Marketplace, customers enjoy an intuitive and consistent user experience when purchasing and using software and services – as customers are used to from B2C app stores. In just a few steps, they can fill their app shopping cart, place their order, and pay and use their products right away – independent of individual manufacturers. Credit card payment is possible in addition to traditional payment methods. Moreover, partners do not need to interact directly with customers to ensure the smooth ordering, payment, and delivery of their software, as this is common practice in today’s industrial marketplaces. Empowered by Siemens and a global presence, the platform is ideal for app developers to access the industrial automation market. To extend and expand the offering step by step, Siemens is placing particular emphasis on additional partner services and software apps which are the focus of the Industrial Edge Ecosystem.

Background information:

The future of industry is in data: This has been clearly demonstrated by the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the last few years. In other words: Data is the key to enhanced productivity, more efficiency, the improved utilization of resources, and to even much more... Future-oriented industrial automation systems must be adaptable and agile in order to fulfill the requirements for faster product development cycles and shorter times to market. Edge Computing can help manufacturing companies to combine their automation systems into the digital factory of the future even more effectively. Any process data generated by equipment and unused so far can thus be transferred to the right (centralized) systems, including production control or cloud systems, in order to make better use of this precious treasure than is the case today. IT market research firms also agree that the Edge Computing technology is key to tackling the challenges of Industry 4.0. In light of huge data volumes and the high speed with which data is generated – and considering the need for real-time insights, as well as the current network restrictions – the deployment of Edge Computing solutions, including the processing of data at the source, is imperative in today’s industrial world. A major benefit of Industrial Edge is the distributed processing and analysis of data by Edge devices on the production level, or in a manner directly integrated into the automation portfolio. The Edge-capable Simatic HMI Unified Comfort Panel is a prime example: Its scope of functions can be extended through apps which make all this possible. The Edge Management System is the central infrastructure for managing connected Edge devices of any kind in your factory, or even worldwide. The system can be installed on site within a company’s own IT infrastructure – for users who attach particular importance to data security and control – or alternatively in private or public cloud infrastructures. Edge application software or updates, such as security-critical firmware updates, can thus be rolled out centrally or remotely on connected Edge devices. Extensive user management supports administrators in implementing the roll-out as planned, along with the fine-granular distribution of user rights, in order to enable high plant and software availability.
