Siemens Mobility is launching a field test for autonomous driving at the Siemens campus in Munich-Perlach, Germany. Working with partners IAV GmbH, Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) e.V., emm Solutions GmbH, UTB Projektmanagement GmbH and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Siemens Mobility is initiating a research project and field test. The test route runs through the campus and enables traffic simulation in a variety of real-life situations.

The technology company Siemens has opened a new test laboratory for industrial connectivity technologies at its Erlangen site. Embedded in the Siemens Technology Center on the Erlangen campus, the Industrial Connectivity Lab offers 300 square meters of space for extensive testing of any connectivity solution in industrial environments: Industrial WLAN, 5G, real-time localization systems (RTLS), and radio frequency identification (RFID).

For the first time, the technology company Siemens is launching a private infrastructure developed in-house for the 5G mobile communications standard. The solution enables industrial companies to build their own local 5G networks that will provide optimal support for automation applications. "By building their own 5G networks, industrial companies are launching the next stage of connected production," says Axel Lorenz, CEO of Process Automation at Siemens. "5G is crucial for applications like mobile robots, autonomous logistics, and driverless transport systems in factories. Siemens' private 5G infrastructure also gives users sole control over the data in their 5G network at all times, and they can custom-configure the network for their applications."

University’s Innovation Campus, The Smart Factory includes a fully operational
production line and experiential labs for developing and exploring innovative
capabilities of smart manufacturing.

Just nine months after construction began, a
topping-out ceremony is being celebrated for the new Siemens Technology Center
at the research campus in the university town of Garching, Germany, near
Munich. As a result, this new building – which was planned digitally and is
being built to meet stringent sustainability requirements – has thus now
reached an important milestone on the journey to Siemens’ future research activities in the
Munich area. With its modern work environments, this facility will serve as an
innovation hub that provides space for inspiration and new ideas. At this center,
more than 450 researchers from Siemens’ “Technology” unit will collaborate on
technologies of the future with around 150 employees and students from the
Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Siemens enables the transmission of Profinet IO
via a private 5G network, which allows data to be transmitted in real time for
industrial applications. This is made possible by the VXLAN (Virtual Extensible
LAN) transmission technology in the Scalance 5G routers and security appliances
from Siemens. VXLAN embeds the Profinet IO protocol, which is transmitted in
Layer 2, into Layer 3 packets, which allows them to be transmitted across
network boundaries. Since Layer 2 communication now takes place via 5G, a
central controller can communicate with decentralized I/O modules on mobile
devices such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) via Profinet in a private 5G
network and no local controls have to be used on the individual AGVs. This
saves costs and reduces maintenance. At the Hannover Messe, visitors can see
this innovation at the booth of the organization "5G-ACIA" in Hall 9.
This year, the 1.4 million square meter Deutsche Messe exhibition site in Hanover, Germany will become 5G-ready. Deutsche Messe, which organizes international capital goods trade shows, has obtained a frequency allocation in the 3.7-3.8 GHz range from the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency) and will set up one of the largest 5G zones in Europe, spanning 30 halls and buildings as well as the entire open-air ground. Siemens is playing a very specific role in this achievement. As one of the key exhibitors at the HANNOVER MESSE, Siemens is setting up a private 5G campus network with a focus on industrial use in one of the exhibition halls in Hanover. The network can be used by exhibitors during trade shows and, outside of trade show times, can be used by companies for tests and field trials.

The movement to
modernize regional transport continues to gain momentum: When the timetable
changes in December 2023, 18 new Desiro HC double-decker trains from Siemens
Mobility will inaugurate service for the Franconia-Thuringia Express. With a
top speed of 160 kilometers per hour, 380 seats, spaces for 36 bicycles, WiFi
service, high-frequency windowpanes that significantly improve cellphone
reception, as well as an electronic passenger information system with 27
monitors, the new Franconia-Thuringia Express operated by DB Regio Bayern
offers a special experience for its passengers. The new trains will operate on
many routes in the future, such as between Nuremberg and Bamberg daily between
5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. every 30 minutes in both directions. The trains will
provide over 10,000 additional seats on this route. DB Regio Bayern and
Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG), which plans, finances and controls
regional and S-Bahn transport on behalf of the state of Bavaria, presented the
new train today together with Siemens Mobility at the Bamberg main station,
followed by a press tour through Franconia. The states of Bavaria and Thuringia
are investing a total of €320 million in the new train fleet to expand regional
transport capacities.

The charging stations will support the bus manufacturer’s prototype electric buses and be available for future eBus orders of its customers.
