Siemens Mobility increases share of “green steel” in production

With a new agreement with voestalpine, Siemens Mobility is further increasing the share of “green steel” in its rail vehicle production. The goal is to source around one-fifth of the steel supplied in 2025 from the CO₂-reduced Greentec Steel Edition of the steel and technology company voestalpine. The new agreement also includes an option for additional quantities over the next three years. The purchase expands the "Green Steel for Bogies" pilot project, which began in 2022 at the Siemens Mobility global competence center for bogies in Graz. In the future, around 3,000 bogies will be produced there annually with an increasing proportion of CO₂-reduced material – an important step towards an even more climate-friendly railway industry.
“By increasing the use of green steel, we are making a significant contribution to the sustainability of the railway industry. At the same time, this strengthens our competitiveness and resilience and consolidates our pioneering role as a provider of sustainable mobility solutions," says Andreas Mehlhorn, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Mobility.
The premium products in the Greentec Steel Edition are produced at the voestalpine site in Linz using a CO₂-optimized production route and generate up to 70 percent less emissions than conventional steel. Siemens Mobility already uses CO₂-reduced steel in bogies, locomotives, and passenger coaches and plans to gradually increase its share.
With this agreement, Siemens Mobility is consistently pursuing its sustainability strategy. By the end of fiscal 2030, the company intends to achieve a 90 percent reduction in CO₂e emissions in its own operations and to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by fiscal 2050. The use of CO₂-reduced steel significantly contributes to achieving these goals and makes rail, as the most environmentally friendly mode of transport, even more sustainable.
In mid-September, voestalpine presented Siemens Mobility with the certificate for the declaration of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the quantities supplied to date. This ensures full transparency and traceability along the supply chain.
