Siemens Mobility equips trains in Finland with ATO and ETCS for initial testing

Siemens Mobility will install ETCS in two trainsets operating in the Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy fleet and also integrate Automated Train Operation (ATO over ETCS) in the solution. The joint test project is paving the way for making Finland’s rail transport more efficient and economical. The Finnish railway network currently covers around 6,000 kilometers of routes.
"We are delighted to inaugurate the digital rail age in Finland with the testing of our proven train control system. Equipping an existing trainset for testing is an important step in this direction,” said Jens Nordmann, Head of Train Control at Siemens Mobility. “We would like to thank our partner Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy for their trust and for the opportunity to realize this project.”
ETCS provides the technical basis for semi-autonomous train operations at optimum speeds. The system saves energy, protects the environment, and increases route capacity.
