Siemens Eurosprinter locomotives approved for ETCS Baseline 3

Siemens Mobility has received type authorization from the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) – the body responsible for harmonizing railway standards and safety across Europe – for the upgrade of its interoperable Eurosprinter locomotives ES64F4 to the European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3.4. Equipped with Atlas ETCS, the locomotives now meet a new European safety and interoperability standard, enabling more efficient and harmonized cross-border operations. The approval marks a major milestone in securing the long-term deployment of the locomotive fleet on key European freight corridors.
“This milestone demonstrates how trust and continuity are essential in our partnership with customers,” said Steffen Bobsien, Vice President Locomotives and Passenger Coaches at Siemens Mobility. “At Siemens Mobility, we stand by our products throughout their entire lifecycle – we support our locomotives and customers for decades, ensuring long-term reliability and smooth cross-border operation.”
The project was awarded in December 2020, with prototype conversions completed at Siemens Mobility’s Allach locomotive plant after just 16 months. Following extensive testing and validation, the application for type authorization was submitted as planned to the ERA in December 2024 and has now been successfully granted.
The Siemens Eurosprinter locomotives ES64F4 are among the most proven and widely used multi-system freight locomotives in Europe. More than 250 units have been delivered to various operators since their introduction in the early 2000s.
Designed for cross-border operation, the locomotives can run under multiple national power and signaling systems and operate across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Poland, and the Czech Republic - making them a key element of international rail freight.
