Statement from Siemens Regarding Paris Climate Accord
Statement from Siemens Regarding Paris Climate Accord
Siemens was
the first global industrial company to commit to carbon neutrality by 2030.
This commitment is not contingent on international treaties or regulations; it
is based on the understanding that we have a responsibility to protect our
planet. From 2014 to 2020, Siemens has been able to minimize the carbon
footprint of its own value chain by more than half (54%), thereby exceeding its
original goal of halving its global carbon-dioxide emissions by 2020.
Along with
other major corporations from around the globe, Siemens is convinced that taking
action to address the causes of climate change is not only prudent, but also
makes economic sense. In 2020, for example, Siemens AG’s revenues related to
the environmental portfolio amounted to €18 billion. This corresponds to 32% of
our revenue from continuing operations.
We
are convinced that an increased push for energy efficiency, renewable energy
technology and electric mobility, along with the growing digitalization and the
introduction of carbon pricing, will speed up a carbon-free future. Siemens
supports the Paris Climate Accord, which has been signed by 194 countries, as
it is an important element in enabling and encouraging governments, other
businesses and investors to turn the billions of dollars in existing carbon-saving
investments into the trillions of dollars the world needs to tackle climate
change.
Siemens
welcomes the news that United States President Joseph R. Biden and his
administration have rejoined the Paris Climate Accord. This sets an important
example for the world in the fight against climate change. Decarbonizing vital
industries, critical infrastructure and cities will not only protect our planet
and result in cleaner air, but it will create jobs, reduce costs for businesses
and governments, and fuel economic recovery.
