DB Regio orders 39 regional multiple units from Siemens for the Rhine Valley network

South-west Germany is counting on Siemens: from 2020 onward, DB Regio AG will be operating its Rhine Valley rail network exclusively with new trains from Siemens. The German Railways order covers 15 Desiro HC and 24 Mireo trains in total, and goes hand in hand with a restructuring of the rail transport services in the Rhine Valley. There is a clear separation between a rapid train system for fast cross-regional services and a regional suburban rail system (S-Bahn) with stops at all stations. The Mireo will be deployed as a regional train (RB) service along the line section from Offenburg via Freiburg to Basel/Neuenburg (Switzerland) as well as in the Kaiserstuhl area on Sundays between Freiburg and Endingen/Breisach. The line section from Karlsruhe via Offenburg and Freiburg to Basel (Switzerland) will be operated with the Desiro HC as a regional express service.

"Only slightly over one year after signing the contract, the first Mireo trains planned for service in the Rhine Valley are already in production. This demonstrates the extremely effective and constructive collaboration of all project participants, not only at Siemens, but also among our partners in the state of Baden-Württemberg and Deutsche Bahn," said Sabrina Soussan, CEO of the Siemens Mobility Division.

The vehicle is conceived as a scalable articulated train. All technical components are installed either beneath the floor or on the roof, so that every single centimeter of the interior space can be used to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. The three-car trains have over 220 seats and a sufficient number of multipurpose areas.

DB Regio Baden Württemberg will exclusively operate new trains in southwestern Germany beginning in 2020. Along with the 24 Mireo trains, 15 Desiro HC (double-decker trains) will also run on the Karlsruhe – Offenburg – Freiburg – Basel route as regional expresses. These changes will completely restructure rail offerings in the Rhine Valley: There will be a clear separation between a fast train system for trans-regional operations between major cities and a regional train system similar to a suburban railway (S-Bahn) that stops at all stations.
Attractive design in the new Mireo
Timeless – yet modern and forward-looking: that sums up the design of the new regional and commuter train platform for Baden-Württemberg. Spaces flooded with light and featuring friendly colors make for a truly pleasurable passenger experience on the journey from Offenburg to Basel. The traditional state colors are an integral feature of the design concept.
