Russian Railways (RZD) has ordered 13 high-speed Velaro RUS trains from Siemens Mobility and Ural Locomotives, a joint venture of the Sinara Group and Siemens AG. The order has a volume of around €1.1 billion. The contract also includes maintenance of the trains for a period of 30 years. RZD originally ordered eight Velaro trainsets from Siemens Mobility in 2006 and placed a follow-up order for an additional eight trains in 2011.

Start of production of eight further high-speed trains for Russia
On December 3, 2012 Valentin Gapanovich (center), Vice President of Russian Railways (RZD), Jochen Eickholt (r), CEO of the Siemens Rail Systems Division, and Ansgar Brockmeyer (2.l), CEO Siemens Business Unit High Speed and Commuter Rail, gave the go-ahead to start production of the eight further Velaro RUS high-speed trains which RZD had ordered in December 2011. In Russia they go by the name of "Sapsan", meaning Peregrine Falcon. "Our trains are symbolic of Russian Railways. They are fast, safe and reliable. And we take on responsibility for maintenance", commented Jochen Eickholt as production got under way.
