Siemens Ukraine has opened a modern educational and scientific Center for Automation and Drives.
Due to quarantine restrictions, the opening of the laboratory was “digital”. The online conference was attended by CEO of Siemens Ukraine Maciej Zielinski, the Rector of KNU, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Mykola Skyba, the Mayor of Khmelnytskyi Symchyshyn Oleksandr, vice-rectors and associate professors, representatives of the city administration, journalists, students, and business representatives. In total, about 160 participants joined the conference.
The idea behind was to combine the virtual world with its real prototype by means of the Digital Twin creating a digital duplicate, and implementing it in the form of scalable model. Various automation equipment from Siemens Automation systems, Industrial Communication, Industrial controls, Industry software and Process Instrumentation is installed here. Thus, students will have to learn not only how to automate manufacturing processes, but also how to work in a team. With the right approach and teamwork, teachers and students will be able to simulate the operation of an entire production line.
Efficient software will support students over the entire life cycle– from the planning and design stages, through configuring and programming. TIA Portal, which combines both the package of all necessary software and integrated libraries for programming and additional hardware simulation opportunities. Therefore, before moving on to work, one can use the features of TIA Portal, PLCSIM, and SIMIT for virtual commissioning.
“Thanks to the modern equipment and software, Khmelnytskyi National University will be able to implement the concept of Dual form of education, issued by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2018. That assumes combination of education and practice for qualified staff within a certain profile which will be delivered be delivered here at a specialized laboratory. After graduating from the University, students will be able to work at high-tech factories with no need to retrain,”- underlined the Rector of KNU, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Mykola Skyba.
As the introduction of digital technologies is one of Siemens’ priorities and the company is already implementing a number of digitalization projects with Ukrainian partners, Siemens Ukraine CEO announced a competition among students, postgraduate students, and doctoral students of the University to develop the best automation project. The winners will be awarded at the end of the next academic year with 1,000 EUR. The details on the competition will be published on the University’s website.

I’m aware that, according to the rating of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Khmelnytskyi National University is among the top ten classical Ukrainian universities in terms of scientific achievements.
