KISMEC & Siemens historical collaboration aimed to spur the growth of future skilled workforce and promote technology transfer in the northern region
In line with the digital transformation and Industry 4.0 initiatives, the Kedah Industrial Skills and Management Development Centre (KISMEC) and Siemens Malaysia announced its first historical collaboration in the Northern Region, expanding new frontiers for the acceleration of digital transformation and automation for the SMEs and industries. An Official Certificate Handover Ceremony to KISMEC as Siemens’ Certified Training Provider was held at KISMEC-own newly set-up training & development center in Kulim Hi-Tech Park.
The momentous event was graced by the Crown Prince of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Sallehuddin, Chief Minister of Kedah YB Dato' Seri Haji Mukhriz bin Mahathir, Minister of Human Resources YB M. Kula Segaran V. Murugeson, and Permatang Pauh Member of Parliament YB Nurul Izzah binti Anwar.
Under this partnership, KISMEC under the flagship of Siemens Innovation and Resources Training Centre (SIRTC), will run and conduct the Siemens Mechatronics Systems Certification Program that will represent a crucial market entry and penetration into the Northern Region, an important economic zone heavily driven by industries such as electronics, automotive, power generation, semiconductor, solar and automation. Under this customized initiatives for the Northern Region that provide exposure to Industrial 4.0, the training program will soon be able to roll out world-class technical training modules to up-skill and re-skill industry players, accelerating the growth of skilled employees and graduates catering current industrial needs.
To aptly demonstrate Siemens’ support for KISMEC towards its journey of digitalization, Siemens has committed putting in place for the training provider resource connectivity, known as IoT Gateway, which will enable its mechatronics program to be capably connected to the cloud. Bridging the skills gap for industry, exposing university graduates, and upgrading the existing workforce with Industry 4.0 training – these are among the more pressing and urgent agenda if the nation is to stay on top of digital transformation that is revolutionizing business models, market needs and manufacturing processes. As current workers are finding difficulty to gain employability and to fill positions due to the lack of skills and know-how, this leaves manufacturing-related jobs on the risk of being increasingly unfilled from the mismatch and incompatibleness in supply and demand.
The event garnered 500 participants and customers from across a range of industries, tenants at the Hi-Tech Park, members of the Kulim Industrial Tenant Association, universities, government agencies as well as non-profit organizations from around the region. To signify this partnership, a certificate was presented by Siemens Malaysia President & CEO, Mr Indranil Lahiri, to KISMEC CEO Mr Mohd Yusuri Yusof.
“The SIRTC is our solution to help bridge the skills gap in the industry, where we want to collaborate with partners, training centers and universities to offer technical know-how and knowledge transfer under our SIRTC certified labs,” said Indranil. “Through it, the upgrading of latest knowledge from industry to the education platform can take form. To date, Siemens is one of the few organizations in the country leading the digitalization drive, and which can ably deliver a comprehensive and full-fledged suite of training programs customized to individual customer’s needs and to meet market demands.
Siemens had put in place its Digitalization Marketplace through the various exhibits from the company’s breadth of solutions such as the Siemens Intelligent Plant Equipment Health Monitoring System to perform monitoring on rotating equipment and to detect anomalies, Smart Data Meter Management system through its EnergyIP solution, the Siemens Remote On-Site Service smart glass technology for field engineers, and the Digital Enterprise Suite for manufacturing companies to digitalize their business processes as well as Control Performance Analytics for optimizing data processing in the most efficient manner.
Meanwhile, Mr Mohd Yusuri said the opening of its second campus, K2, which will be a certified Automation and Industry 4.0 training centre, is very much aligned to its vision to be the Centre of Excellence in TVET with international accreditation and global recognition.
"Besides having certified trainers and the latest training equipment, a wide strategic network of training partners must exist to provide the best support in human capital development for the industries. Therefore, the award of Siemens Innovation and Resources Training Centre to K2 is a significant milestone in achieving KISMEC’s goals to be a better and stronger Centre of Excellence in TVET,” he said. Established since 1993, KISMEC has trained over 30,600 participants, 74% of which are made up of existing workforce from over 600 companies.
Siemens added that it is also a strong supporter of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which it views as a mandatory criterion in the industry infrastructure because sustainable development and localization of skills can only be possible when this pipeline for skilled labour is continuously built. “We are glad to support TVET initiatives by working with the relevant government stakeholders and Ministry as this is the next step forward,” concluded Indranil.
