Siemens and Government of Iraq sign contracts for 13 substations to strengthen energy grid

Siemens and the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity have signed contracts for 13, 132/33-kilovolt substations and the supply of 35 power transformers, to strengthen the country’s electricity transmission and distribution network. The new infrastructure will resolve energy transmission bottlenecks in Basra, and support a reliable power supply to more than two million people in the area as part of the implementation of Phase 1 of the Iraq Roadmap.
“These substations are an important step towards a reliable, stable and modernized electricity grid for Iraq, bringing power to homes and businesses with efficient transmission and distribution technology,” said Mahmoud Hanafy, Executive Vice President, Gas & Power, EPC, Siemens Middle East. “I’m pleased to be working with the Ministry of Electricity to deliver on our promise to the Iraqi people, and implementing our Iraq Roadmap in support of society and sustainable economic development.”
The Siemens Roadmap for the Electrification of the New Iraq is designed to meet the country’s reconstruction goals, and includes the addition of new and highly-efficient power generation capacity, rehabilitation and upgrade of existing power plants and the expansion of transmission and distribution networks.
Following the agreement in April 2019 to implement Phase 1 of the Roadmap, 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity has already been added to the country’s grid.
“I welcome the contribution the substations and transformers will make to strengthening Iraq’s national grid,” said Dr. Luay Al-Khatteeb, Minister of Electricity of Iraq. “The addition of this power infrastructure will provide reliable electricity to more than two million people in Basra.”
Phase 1 of the Iraq roadmap includes the EPC construction of a 500 megawatt gas-fired power plant, the upgrade of 40 gas turbines with upstream cooling systems and the execution of 13 substations along with the supply of 35 power transformers.
