A global powerhouse in electrical engineering and electronics leading the age of digitalization, Siemens Korea (Siemens Ltd. Seoul) held the ‘5th Siemens Green School Olympiad’ on August 8 at the Global Convention Plaza of Seoul National University. There were a total of 120 participants in the event, including 80 elementary school students, a supporter group of university students and Siemens employees.
As part of its corporate citizenship programs, Siemens Ltd. Seoul has operated ‘Siemens Green School’ visiting elementary schools and providing environment and science educational programs once every month since 2014. The ‘Siemens Green School Olympiad’ is an annual intensive course for the students who have previously participated in the Siemens Green School program.
This year’s Olympiad featured software and science education and a role-playing activity. Student participants build up a Mars rover with the educational kit ‘LEGO WeDo 2.0’, based on the case of ‘Curiosity’, NASA’s Mars rover to which Siemens PLM software was applied in the design phase. By assembling and controlling the LEGO robot, the students were able to learn coding in easy and entertaining ways and step up their interest in software. The group mission of drawing up the minimum travel distance for the robot increased their creativity, problem solving skills and teamwork.
In the afternoon session, students engaged in a role playing activity under the theme ‘Establishing an Earth-Friendly Company’. The students worked together in small groups, sharing ideas and taking different roles to create virtual eco-friendly companies for solving environmental issues faced in daily life, such as plastic usage and air pollution.
Mr. ChewKong Lum, Chairman and CEO (acting) of Siemens Ltd. Seoul, said “Creativity and integrated thinking are must factors for fostering future talents in the era of Industrie 4.0. Siemens will continue to provide diverse experience opportunities and quality education for elementary school students in Korea, thus contributing into cultivating scientific thinking and eco-friendly perspective.”

Meanwhile, the Siemens Green School is fully financed by the ‘Ai SaRang KiKeum’ fund, a matching grant program in which the total collected fund from employees is matched by the company.
