Siemens and ILJIN Electric collaborate to develop the World’s First, Eco-friendly 170 kV Gas-insulated Switchgear (GIS) based on Vacuum Interrupter (VI) technology

GIS filled with Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) has been used as a core component in sub-stations, to break excessive fault currents in case of failure to protect electrical equip-ment. SF6 is a greenhouse gas with significant global warming potential.
The contract for the development of the 170 kV eco-friendly GIS was signed between Siemens AG and Iljin Electric at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul on June 29, 2018.
With the signing of this contract, Siemens AG and Iljin Electric will jointly develop the world’s first eco-friendly 170kV GIS based on high-tech VI technology and clean-air insulation.
By applying these technologies, the emission of any greenhouse gas in GIS will be completely avoided.Siemens has already unveiled the industry’s first 145kV GIS with VI and clean-air ap-plication at the CIGRE 2016 (International Council on Large Electric Systems) in Paris, overcoming technical limitations that the industry had been facing.
“We are pleased to develop and manufacture the 170kV cutting-edge, eco-friendly GIS in Korea with Iljin Electric.” said Mr. Karlheinz Kronen, CEO of the High Voltage Prod-ucts Business Unit at Siemens AG. He added, “Based on the innovative technology of Siemens, we will strive to fulfill the market demand for eco-friendly products as well as to contribute in developing Korea’s future electric power industry.”
Mr. JungSuk Huh, Vice Chairman of Iljin Electric said, “The development of this high-tech GIS, based on the extensive experience and expertise of both companies, will enable us to meet the Korean power market’s need for eco-friendly products.
