Siemens showcases new Picadilly line trains at InnoTrans exhibition in Berlin

vlnr: Michael Peter, CEO Siemens Mobility ; Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner,  Aglaja Schneider, Joint CEO and Managing Director, Rolling Stock and Customer Services at Siemens Mobility UK&I

Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner, said:
“These new trains will fundamentally change the experience of travelling on the Piccadilly line when they start entering service. They will become one of the first things an international visitor will experience when they come to London, be it through Heathrow or St Pancras International, and will be more energy efficient and spacious, provide CCTV and air conditioning and give customers better information during their journeys. Journeys will be more accessible, safer and faster, and the experience for our customers will be transformed.”
The new Piccadilly line trains have been designed to transform the passenger experience with air-conditioning, walk-through carriages, enhanced accessibility, onboard CCTV and improved onboard digital information systems. The trains will also be more reliable, increase capacity by 10% and consume 20% less energy than the existing fleet. The trains will be digitally connected via our Railigent platform, meaning trains will be able to send live location data and live component health data to TfL’s depots, enabling predictive maintenance.

Aglaja Schneider, Joint CEO and Managing Director, Rolling Stock and Customer Services at Siemens Mobility UK&I, said:

“I’m incredibly proud to see the new Piccadilly line train exhibited at InnoTrans. Having been part of this programme earlier in its development, it's fantastic to see how far the project has come and to share that progress with the wider rail industry. I would like to thank the teams across Siemens Mobility and Transport for London for their hard work and collaboration. From design and manufacturing through to testing, teams from both organisations have worked side by side to bring the project to life. Built at our Goole Rail Village in East Yorkshire, it also represents our continued investment in UK manufacturing and skills.”
Alongside the train, Siemens Mobility showcased its portfolio of digitally connected rail solutions, including Railigent X, Signaling X and Mobility Software Suite X. Powered by Siemens Xcelerator, these technologies help operators optimise performance, improve reliability and make better use of rail infrastructure, supporting the delivery of a more efficient and sustainable railway.
Notes to editors:

  • Siemens Mobility is investing up to £240 million in the Goole Rail Village, a site that spans 67 acres, the size of 35 football pitches. London Underground’s new Piccadilly line trains will be assembled at Goole before they begin operating between December 2026 - June 2027.
  • Overall, Siemens Mobility’s investment will bring up to 1,000 new jobs to the East Riding of Yorkshire, as well as around 1,700 supply chain opportunities, promoting localisation and helping to serve other global markets by 2030.
  • The Goole Rail Village is a fully integrated rail hub, consisting of the Train Manufacturing Facility which assembles and commissions trains, the Components Facility where Siemens maintains gearboxes, traction motors and other parts for train and tram fleets, the Logistics Centre warehousing facility, and the Rail Accelerator and Innovation Solutions hub for Enterprise (RaisE) business centre. With additional investment of up to £40 million, all of this will be joined by a Bogie Assembly and Service Centre, which will incorporate and expand Siemens Mobility’s current capabilities to overhaul bogies from UK trains.
  • Siemens Mobility has supported the local supply chain wherever possible, contracting Leeds-based GMI Construction for the build of the Goole factory, Components Facility and the warehouse. The GMI supply chain is based entirely in the UK with over 70% of it based in Yorkshire. Several components for the Piccadilly line trains will also come from local Yorkshire and UK suppliers, such as the exterior lighting from LPA Lighting, just 25 miles away from the Goole factory.
