Siemens to supply Taiwan’s Taoyuan Metro with Signaling X technology

From left to right: Georgia Shih, Finance Director of Siemens Mobility GmbH Taiwan Branch, together with former Managing Director Thomas Stein and current Managing Director [Name einfügen], recently signed new contracts alongside Gareth Tang, President of Urban Solutions at ST Engineering, and Koh Chan Tia, Head of Global Sales for Urban Solutions, to deliver Signaling X solutions for Taoyuan’s Brown Line and Green Line Extension.

Siemens has been awarded the signaling contracts for two major Taoyuan metro projects by ST Engineering’s Urban Solutions business, the turnkey rail services provider leading project management and systems integration, at this year’s Singapore Urban Mobility Week. Siemens is bringing its latest Signaling X technology to Taiwan, setting new standards for the future of rail signaling. Siemens will deliver the approximately 11-kilometer Taoyuan Brown Line – including eight stations (both underground and elevated) – as well as the Taoyuan Green Line Extension, which connects the Green Line towards Zhongli (A23) and establishes vital future connectivity to the major multi-level transit hub. The projects will leverage advanced digital signaling technologies, including GoA4 fully automated train operation and ATS (Automatic Train Supervision).
"We are proud to bring our latest Signaling X technology to Taiwan," said Marc Ludwig, Executive Vice President Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility. "This marks a major milestone in the digitalization of rail transport as we deploy our new generation of software-defined signaling technology for the Taoyuan Metro. Together with ST Engineering, we are building on our existing experience in Taoyuan to reduce interface complexity and support efficient project delivery, while providing the foundation for safe, reliable and fully automated operations."
The project exemplifies the shift from hardware-centric signaling systems to a software-defined, virtualized architecture, allowing existing infrastructure to be modernized more easily, flexibly and efficiently. Signaling X connects proven rail technologies with a new generation of digital capabilities, driving the digital transformation of rail infrastructure.
Signaling X as the technology foundation for next-generation rail signaling
Signaling X is Siemens’ integrated technology foundation for the digital transformation of rail infrastructure. It brings together safety-critical and non-safety-critical applications, open interfaces and services. The core of the architecture lies in the decoupling of software from proprietary hardware, allowing applications to run on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware instead of dedicated proprietary components. This paradigm shift allows operators to modernize and scale their infrastructure independently of specific hardware lifecycles. Maintenance is simplified, and spare parts management becomes more efficient by leveraging globally available IT standards. The DS3 (Distributed Smart Safe System) safety platform provides a redundant environment with highest possible availability, in which safety-critical applications meet the highest requirements according to CENELEC Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4). Signaling X follows secure-by-design and zero-trust principles for the operation of critical infrastructure.
