Siemens recognized as a Leader in IDC MarketScape for Life Sciences R&D Lab of the Future
Siemens' portfolio for the life sciences industry spans the pharmaceutical value chain from R&D through manufacturing.
IDC MarketScape
assessed vendors based on their current capabilities and the strength of their
strategy for the next three to five years. According to the report, “Siemens’
differentiators include its end-to-end coverage of the pharma value chain, from
R&D, pilot, scale-up through commercial manufacturing to buildings and
electrification, its comprehensive digital twin and AI-enabled portfolio, its
open and vendor-agnostic Smart Lab Ecosystem, and its Enterprise Recipe
Management approach built on the ISA-88 standard.”
“Life sciences
companies no longer need isolated digital transformation initiatives. They need
a continuous digital thread that connects scientific discovery, process
development and manufacturing execution,” said Maria Grahm, Vice President of
Vertical Life Sciences at Siemens. “We believe this recognition validates
Siemens' vision of creating a seamless, AI-enabled environment where insights
generated in the lab can directly accelerate industrial-scale production and
ultimately help bring therapies to patients faster.” Siemens defines the Lab of
the Future as a connected, AI-enabled scientific environment where data, models
and workflows move seamlessly across discovery, development, scale-up and
manufacturing.
As the IDC MarketScape notes, "GSK
worked with Siemens and Atos to digitalize its vaccine development and
manufacturing value chain, using AI, SIMATIC SIPAT, TIA Portal, and Simcenter
to virtually test and gain insights across development and production and to
build predictive and prescriptive models from real-time, inline sensor data.
Siemens noted that the engagement produced a digital twin for adjuvant
technologies that reduced physical experiments by 25 percent, alongside a
double-digit percentage reduction in batches and a shortened time to market for
a new process."
In another engagement noted in the report, "AstraZeneca
worked with Siemens’ gPROMS-formulated products process modeling technology to
explore the design of a tablet manufacturing process, constructing a flowsheet
model of a dry granulation and tableting process and running over 3,000 virtual
experiments to quantify the criticality of material properties and process
parameters on product quality attributes, generating significant savings in
time, resources, and materials versus physical experimentation."
The report also noted several strengths,
noting Siemens’ Smart Lab Ecosystem (SLE), “a modular, vendor-agnostic
infrastructure kit that allows flexible plug -and-play composition of room
segments, devices, and sensors to create adaptable research and laboratory
spaces. Independently tested with the University of Applied Sciences
Luzern in Switzerland under 'Project PEARL,’ Siemens
reports the Smart Lab Ecosystem delivers a 31 percent superior local air
change rate, 29 percent faster particle removal, and 45 percent better
ventilation efficiency, alongside up to 60 percent faster lab design and
construction and up to 80 percent reduction in changeover time between
lab configurations.“
These engagements
build on Siemens' broader AI strategy for life sciences. Following its 2025
acquisition of Dotmatics, Siemens extended its digital thread further upstream
into drug discovery, creating a unique connection between scientific research
and industrial execution. Through Dotmatics Luma, an AI-native scientific
intelligence platform, researchers can connect laboratory instruments,
scientific applications and enterprise systems into a unified data environment
that supports faster and more informed decisions throughout the product lifecycle.
Dotmatics Luma is
part of Siemens Xcelerator, Siemens' open digital business platform that
unifies its life sciences offering across the value chain. Siemens' portfolio
for the life sciences industry spans the entire pharmaceutical value chain,
from molecule to market, enabling a continuous digital thread across product
and production lifecycles.
About IDC MarketScape
IDC MarketScape vendor assessment model is designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of technology and service suppliers in a given market. The research utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that results in a single graphical illustration of each supplier's position within a given market. IDC MarketScape provides a clear framework in which the product and service offerings, capabilities and strategies, and current and future market success factors of technology suppliers can be meaningfully compared. The framework also provides technology buyers with a 360-degree assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and prospective suppliers.
