The Siemens Building Technologies Division has won a 2017 European Energy Service Award (EESA) in the category "Best European Energy Service Project" for its energy performance contracting (EPC) project at Hvidovre Hospital, the largest EPC project in Denmark to date. The project will allow the 245,000 m² hospital near Copenhagen to reduce its heat consumption by 41 percent and its electricity consumption by 23 percent. The total energy consumption will be cut by approximately one third.
The measures include expanding the hospital's large existing photovoltaic system, installing geothermal storage systems and wind turbines, optimizing the existing technical systems and upgrading the entire control system. The retrofits and the expansion of the energy systems are scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2018. The total investment will be 23 million euros.
The modernization will also benefit the patients of Hvidovre Hospital: The Siemens building automation system Desigo TRA (Total Room Automation) will allow patients to control lighting, heating, ventilation as well as curtains and blinds directly from a bedside terminal. This ensures individualized comfort.
The European Energy Service Award (EESA) is part of the European Energy Service Initiative toward the EU 2020 Energy Saving Targets (EESI 2020). This initiative aims at fostering the use of energy performance contracting in Europe. The EESA honors outstanding efforts and achievements in the field of energy services in Europe. This year's award ceremony was held in Berlin.
