Siemens Mobility proudly handed over the first Vectron MS locomotive to Rail Traction Company (RTC) S.p.A. at the Transport Logistic exhibition 2025 in Munich. The event, attended by Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter and executives from both companies, underlines the strong partnership between Siemens Mobility and RTC S.p.A. The Vectron MS locomotive, with multi-system approvals for eleven European countries, empowers RTC S.p.A. to manage cross-border rail transport efficiently and sustainably.
The delivery comprises two separate contracts totaling six state-of-the-art locomotives, with RTC S.p.A. receiving four Vectron MS units and its partner railway undertaking InRail S.p.A. receiving two. This bolsters both companies as key European players in freight transport services. Specifically, the locomotive delivered today will operate on the SCAN-MED corridor over the Brenner Pass, one of Europe's most critical freight transport routes across the Alps.
“We are delighted to support RTC with our cutting-edge Vectron MS locomotive, which is renowned for its versatility and efficiency in meeting the growing demands of European cross-border rail freight” said Karl Blaim, Managing Director of Siemens Mobility. “With its state-of-the-art technology and proven reliability, the Vectron MS offers seamless transitions across different countries, making it the ideal solution for both sustainable passenger and freight services".
"The investment in these locomotives is part of a long-term vision aimed at strengthening rail interoperability and overcoming infrastructure barriers between European countries” said Martin Ausserdorfer, CEO at RTC S.p.A. and President at InRail S.p.A. “The ability to operate with the same locomotive across multiple Countries is a key step toward the integration of the European rail system. Within this framework, our commitment is particularly focused on the development of rail traffic through the Mediterranean and the SCAN-MED Corridor, with the Brenner Base Tunnel as a strategic hub for the sustainable mobility of the future".
"Six years after celebrating InRail’s tenth anniversary, we are proud to mark another important milestone: the union with RTC and the acquisition of six interoperable Siemens locomotives. These new locomotives, featuring a livery that reflects the shared identity of both companies, symbolize our joint commitment to environmental sustainability by promoting the shift of freight transport from road to rail," stated Guido Porta, CEO InRail S.p.A.
Bavaria's Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter: "I am pleased that locomotives from Bavaria are now further advancing the transport of goods across the Alps! The handover of the first Siemens Vectron MS strengthens the connections between Germany, Austria, and Italy. Additionally, we need to further expand the infrastructure on the route across the Alps. This includes, on the German side, especially the construction of the Brenner North Approach. It is essential for the Bavarian economy and cross-border traffic!".
