Siemens boosts energy efficiency of a Turkish sugar factory

The picture shows the Sivacon S8 low-voltage switchgear panel.

The Simaris software-based planning tool was used to dimension and engineer the electric power distribution system taking all safety requirements into account. The scope of supply includes 100 Sivacon S8 low-voltage switchgear panels, 110 communication-enabled 3VA molded case circuit breakers, 22 3WL open circuit breakers to protect the main power circuits as well as more than 20 7KM PAC4200 and 7KM PAC3100 measuring devices. The powermanager software program collects and analyzes the energy data acquired by the measuring devices. The sugar factory placed the order for installing the components with the Turkish electrical installation firm ELTES Elektrik İnş. Taah. San. Ve Tic. A.Ş.
Sivacon S8 low-voltage switchgear handles the main power distribution. Thanks to its double-front design, this switchgear contains up to 30 percent less copper than conventional machines. At its heart is the modular 3VA molded case circuit breaker from Siemens' Sentron portfolio, equipped with electronic trip units (ETU). Molded case circuit breakers serve to protect the cables and electrical loads in buildings and industrial plants against damage, faults, and outages which can be caused by malfunctions such as short-circuits or overloads. The 3VA molded case circuit breakers (with ETU850 electronic trip units) also collect current, voltage, power and energy values as well as diagnostic data, and can be integrated into higher-level automation and energy management systems. At Amasya Sugar Factory, the measuring devices collect all energy and system data and transmit these data directly via an Ethernet interface to the energy management system. Plant operators thus have an up-to-date overview of the power consumption of the entire plant at all times and can display entire load profiles. All loads can be activated and regulated via the system.
Amasya Sugar went into operation in 1954, at which time it processed 1,800 metric tons of sugar beets per day. The plant today has meanwhile increased its sugar beet processing capacity to 6,000 tons a day. From the start, the plant managers have relied on power systems from Siemens, and these are now being completely replaced with new Siemens systems and components.
