"Creating Perfect Places": Innovations for safe and energy-efficient buildings

ISH 2017

The motto of this year's Building Technologies display is "Creating Perfect Places". Today, people spend about 90 percent of their lives in buildings – not just their own residence, but also offices, production facilities, schools and universities as well as hospitals and retirement homes. Products and solutions from Siemens help make these buildings perfect places – safe and secure places with a comfortable climate.
At its booth, Building Technologies will also show how digitalization in building technology is changing the entire lifecycle of buildings, from planning and construction to utilization and management. Digitalization is the key to efficient and intelligently networked buildings that are able to communicate. The impact of this development will be demonstrated in different thematic areas:
  • Networked products, cloud solutions and smart data: Thanks to digitalization, buildings can communicate data such as energy consumption and pending maintenance. The flow of data begins with networked products: Sensors and actuators deliver a continuous stream of data and send it to the cloud. Analytics, and the expertise of Siemens, turn the "big data" that is being collected into "smart data." This makes it possible to identify user behavior or consumption patterns and initiate corrective measures.
  • Innovative building and energy management: Using a digital interface, the Desigo CC building and energy management platform consolidates data from different disciplines (HVAC, security, fire safety, etc.) in a single user interface. This makes it possible to manage, control and analyze the entire building from a central location so it can be operated economically, safely and in an energy-efficient manner.
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM): Building Technologies is one of the first vendors to supply a comprehensive range of HVAC products that include digital BIM data for use in the "digital twin." This digital model is used to design the building with all its disciplines and perform ongoing simulation, testing and error correction during the design phase. The benefits of this approach include optimized energy efficiency, higher cost savings and better sustainability. Siemens already has over 1,000 products from different areas (field devices, room automation, fire safety) that come with BIM data. More products are added on a continuous basis.
To solidify these concepts, Building Technologies will present its extensive portfolio of systems, solutions and products for energy-efficient rooms and buildings. Highlights include the Desigo CC building management platform, which has a number of new features. For example, the new version supports additional subsystems, including fire safety, security and energy. A completely new energy management application gives building owners and facility managers absolute transparency over electrical energy and power distribution. A new reporting engine for data analytics and advanced reporting transforms complex data into actionable information. Expanded storage options support the long-term retention of data. The new migration tools of Desigo CC ensure a seamless transition from legacy systems.
The user-friendly Desigo Control Point solution, which will be released in the second half of this year, will make its trade show debut at ISH 2017. Desigo Control Point uses modern touch panels and web-based applications to make buildings easier to operate. It supports the use of smart devices to monitor and operate HVAC, lighting and shading equipment. Desigo Control Point is built for tool-free commissioning and covers a number of areas, including central web operation in small and medium-size buildings as well as room operation and local system operation in large buildings.
Building Technologies has developed a new solution for room pressure and fume hood control especially for use in laboratories and clean rooms. This solution is based on the Desigo building automation system, communicates via BACnet/IP and ensures reliable, precise and fast measurement, control and monitoring of air volumes and room pressures.
Siemens will also show new valves from its Acvatix portfolio that offer even more precise and energy-efficient HVAC operation. The expanded product range includes optimized butterfly valves with a closing pressure of 12 bar and a temperature range of -20 to 120°C; the valves are available with lug or wafer connectors. The trade show exhibit will also include the expanded line of 6-port control ball valves that are especially suitable for use in heated/chilled ceiling applications and, thanks to a unique valve-actuator connection, significantly speed up installation. The built-in pressure compensation feature increases consumer safety.
Siemens has also added new models and functions to its family of OpenAir actuators. These include new actuators without spring return in the 2 to 10 Nm range and a new selection of 4 Nm actuators with spring return. A patented new motor control technology ensures long service life of these models and extremely quiet operation (< 30 db(A)). New actuators with Modbus RTU technology will also be shown. They save time and money during commissioning and offer extremely fast integration in building automation systems. Communicating VAV compact controllers in conjunction with Desigo AirOptiControl deliver major energy and cost savings. A new range of 4 Nm actuators for fire dampers will also be on display.
Finally, Building Technologies will introduce the new Climatix C600 controller range especially for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). These new controllers have faster processors and more application memory, can communicate via all common standards and support secure cloud-based access for high system performance and efficient remote maintenance. Thanks to the controllers' expanded connectivity, integrating the new communicating valve and air damper actuators and sensors into air handling units (AHUs) is extremely cost-efficient. The bus topology simplifies the AHU wiring concept, reducing material and labor costs in production up to 30 percent.
To round out its trade show exhibits, Building Technologies will present its consulting and service portfolio as well as the training program of BT Academy, which offers around 100 basic and expert building technology courses every year.
