EinDollarBrille revolutionizes affordable eyeglasses using Siemens’ software

More than 950 million people around the world need glasses but cannot afford them. But the ability to see clearly is the most important foundation for education and equality. Imagine people could manufacture eyeglasses locally that cost under one dollar using a simple machine that doesn't require any electricity. Wouldn’t that change the world?
This is exactly what motivated Martin Aufmuth, founder and CEO of German non-profit EinDollarBrille e.V., to create eyeglasses that even the poorest could afford that can be manufactured in the field with a simple machine that does not require electricity. With Siemens technology, this can now be done even more effectively: Aufmuth and his team use Siemens’ Solid Edge software, which is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. Not only can the glasses be designed and modeled in 3D using this software, it also helps make the manufacture of the bending machine and the tools needed to produce the glasses in the field more efficient and repeatable. EinDollarBrille is currently active in ten project countries around the world. Instead of simply shipping out glasses to those in need, the goal is to enable the people in the respective countries to help themselves: After training, people can make a living from the production and sale of classes. Over 420.000 people have been provided with glasses to date. And Siemens will help ensure that there will be even more in the future.
