Media representatives got a first-hand impression of the new Vienna Metro during a test drive on the 14th April 2021 – in the presence of Public Transport City Councillor Peter Hanke, Wiener-Linien Managing Director Günter Steinbauer and Siemens Mobility CEO Arnulf Wolfram. After the successful approval of operation, the so-called 'X-Wagen' will be in use for all Viennese on the four lines U1 to U4 from 2022. With the completion of the new U5 in 2026, the new vehicles will also be running fully automatically.

Passenger service from 2022 after several thousand test kilometres
The pre-series train was delivered to Wiener Linien in July 2020. Since then, the new metro will be thoroughly checked until it will start passenger service on the U1, U2, U3 and U4 lines from 2022 when it receives its operation approval. The X-car will be an ‘experienced’ train – with several thousand accumulated test kilometers over more than 250 test days.
