"The requirements for connecting to the electricity market and the electricity grid become stricter as the Battery Energy Storage System grows larger. The demanding integration phase has now been completed, and the Nurmijärvi Battery Energy Storage System will be connected to all marketplaces in the electricity and reserve markets to ensure a future-proof system. Smart multi-market optimization delivers the best market returns to the customer," says Miia Wallén, Head of Siemens' Flexible Services Unit in the Nordics at Siemens Osakeyhtiö.
"The Nurmijärvi Battery Energy Storage System contributes to maintaining the stability of the electricity system. These are the kinds of projects we want to invest in: they combine advanced technology, an interesting market outlook, and support for the green transition. We will be among the first to benefit from the opportunities of the entire electricity and reserve market, and Siemens' involvement from the beginning has ensured that the project has the latest market understanding, technological expertise and know-how," says Antti Jaakonsaari, Evli's Portfolio Manager.
The industrial-grade Battery Energy Storage System in Nurmijärvi supports the development of a flexible energy system in Finland, as it can offer significant flexibility for balancing the electricity grid. The Nurmijärvi Battery Energy Storage System has an output of approximately 40 MW and an energy capacity of 81 MWh, making it one of the largest electricity storage facilities in Finland.
A flexibly functioning electricity market is the most cost-effective way to achieve a balance between electricity supply and demand and thus ensure society's electricity supply. The need for flexibility in the electricity market is increasing as fossil power plants are replaced with renewable wind and solar energy. Flexibility can be achieved in the energy system by connecting various sites capable of flexibility to the electricity network, such as electricity storage facilities suitable for quick reactions. The trading of electricity storage in the reserve market is carried out through Siemens Osakeyhtiö's VIBECO subsidiary.

The Nurmijärvi Battery Energy Storage System is one of the first electricity storage facilities of its size to be connected to all markets with new requirements

The system technical requirements for Battery Energy Storage System to be connected to the Finnish electricity system have been staggered according to the size category from Class A to Class D. The Battery Energy Storage System in Nurmijärvi is of the D category, i.e. the largest in size.
To ensure the stability and reliability of the power system, it is important that the Battery Energy Storage System remain within the frequency and voltage ranges specified in the requirements and can withstand the voltage and frequency fluctuations occurring in the power system. Before being connected to the electricity grid and marketplaces, the Battery Energy Storage System must pass numerous tests. The Nurmijärvi Battery Energy Storage System is one of the first electricity storage facilities of its size to meet the new defined requirements and has been integrated into all marketplaces after passing the required tests.
