Siemens provides a tool to São Paulo City administration that has helped global cities become more sustainable

Siemens signed on 14th March a cooperation agreement with São Paulo City administration for the development of initiatives, studies and strategic plans to reduce the emission of pollutants in São Paulo.

For this initiative, Siemens will provide its City Performance Tool (CyPT), an intelligent data analysis system that helps municipal planners identify priority areas for investments to make these cities more sustainable and, particularly, reduce emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), NOx (nitrogen oxides) and particulates. 

The agreement signature happened today, 14th March, during the World Economic Forum on Latin America 2018 in São Paulo, with the presence of João Doria, Mayor of São Paulo; Marcos Penido, Secretary of Services and Works of São Paulo; André Clark, CEO of Siemens Brazil; and Joe Kaeser, CEO of Siemens AG.
The initiative is similar to others conducted by Siemens in many other cities around the world, such as San Francisco, Mexico City, Copenhagen and Madrid, among others. “This initiative is part of our vision of smart cities, where Siemens is a reference with its vast global experience,” says Mayor João Doria.

CyPT is also a platform of collaboration among cities. It allows, by analysing data from other cities around the world, the application of best practices and lessons learned. “This tool supports the decision-making process. If the city administration wants to evaluate the implementation of new BRT corridors, or electric buses or new metro lines, it can measure the impact of the solution on reducing pollutants, by simulating the best scenarios for the expected results before its implementation,” explains André Clark, CEO of Siemens Brazil.

According to Tiago Barreira, director of City IT Applications at Siemens, the City Performance Tool is a model developed by Siemens that uses data to analyse the impact of technology solutions on three major challenges: greenhouse gas emission, air quality, and employment creation.
 Through the simulation of different scenarios, the city can measure the expectation of goal fulfilment and identify aspects requiring specific priority actions. “It will be possible to process information about the city in terms of construction, energy origin and distribution, and urban mobility, and compare these data to current goals of the cities and their growth expectations.”

“The intelligent use of data is an example of our vision for the future of cities, as they will use their resources in a more efficient way, improving the quality of life of the population,” says André Clark.

Clark highlights this initiative is part of the company’s vision of its role in the society. “We are constantly evaluating ourselves and trying to better understand our role and our responsibilities in the society. And in this case, we try to cooperate in issues that are relevant to the society. This action shows we are aligned with our own business conduct,” he says. 

Siemens has a public commitment to society, particularly based on sustainability. Today, Siemens’ solutions help prevent customer emissions of 570 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.
