Natura and Siemens launch groundbreaking Industry 4.0 project in the Amazon rainforest
By digitizing production, the initiative boosts agro-industrial productivity and expands income generation opportunities in the region.
Natura and Siemens have announced the launch of the “Moiru” project in the Amazônia, a pioneering initiative aimed at digitizing industrial processes in rural Amazonian areas, which still rely heavily on analog practices. “Moiru,” a word in Tupi meaning “mutual help,” embodies the concept of symbiosis that Natura has cultivated for over 25 years in the region, connecting socio-biodiversity supply chains with Industry 4.0 technologies. Through the Tech4Amazonia initiative, Siemens leads the deployment of automation, simulation, and data intelligence technologies, while Natura contributes scientific expertise in socio-biodiversity and long-standing relationships with local communities.

In 2024, the partnership with Siemens was established to make this initiative viable, with the goal of increasing production efficiency in essential oil extraction. The first implementation took place at the Campo Limpo Cooperative in Santo Antônio do Tauá (PA). Based on active listening to the challenges faced by cooperatives, Siemens developed a digital twin of the extraction vat using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and installed smart sensors and valves that enable remote control and real-time data collection. This initiative is directly aligned with the strategy for Natura’s future Innovation Center in Benevides, also in Pará, reinforcing the company’s leadership in biodiversity and accelerating innovations applied to socio-biodiversity.
“As we approach COP30, we remain committed to developing and sharing best practices that promote sustainable local development. This partnership is a prime example, combining technology with socioeconomic impact. With the implementation of new tools, essential oil extraction has become more efficient and profitable for the community. Moreover, this initiative lays the groundwork for further advancements using the infrastructure we’ve created,” says Romulo Zamberlan, Director of Advanced Research at Natura.
Initial results from the partnership show a significant impact on sustainability: there has been a substantial reduction in energy and water consumption, positively influencing emissions and the environmental footprint of agro-industrial production.
The data generated and collected in real time will be integrated and analyzed by Natura scientists, supported by artificial intelligence, to enhance current processes and develop new bio-ingredients. This will create a replicable model for various partner agro-industries. Key features include process automation through the installation of remotely controlled valves and sensors. “We believe technology is a bridge between purpose and impact. By applying automation, simulation, and data intelligence solutions in such a unique context as the Amazônia, we are not only optimizing processes but co-creating a scalable and sustainable development model. The Moiru project is a clear example of innovation with regional impact, reinforcing technology’s role as an ally of the bioeconomy,” says José Borges Frias, Head of Innovation at Siemens Brazil.

Socio-environmental Impact and Income Generation
The Campo Limpo community, through APROCAMP, has been supplying plant-based raw materials to Natura since 2003, including inputs such as pataqueira, priprioca, and estoraque. Since 2024, with the inauguration of its first essential oil agro-industry, the community has taken on the highest value-added stage: the production of essential oils.
Building these agro-industries is part of Natura’s strategy to boost local production and income. Siemens will provide technical support to replicate the solutions at Natura’s future Innovation Center in Benevides, contributing specifications and expanding automation to other production lines. Digitization through “Moiru” enhances community benefits, which have already been positively impacted by essential oil extraction—an activity that has led to an estimated 60% increase in the community’s annual gross revenue and a 25% rise in job opportunities for APROCAMP workers.
