For many years now, the original equipment manufacturer Elettromeccanica Bovone (Bovone) has been automating the handling and transfer elements of its edge grinding and machining units, utilizing robots in the process. Bovone has chosen to use Siemens control and automation technology for its latest solution which allows integration of all the machines and robots. The system enables Bovone to capture data such as cycle times, speeds, quantities and motor output via an energy meter and to transfer this information to the cloud-based open IoT operating system MindSphere for analysis. This allows the business to make use of the many benefits of Industrie 4.0 and thus to optimize processes such as maintenance.
At the heart of the new, cost-optimized solution from Bovone are the Simatic S7-1200 basic fail-safe controllers on the machines. These are connected to Profinet via a fail-safe CPU (Central Processing Unit) in the form of a Simatic ET 200SP distributed I/O. A CPU coordinates the interaction between machines and robots and ensures fail-safe operation by means of safety light curtains, doors and gates. In addition to this, it bundles the machine and product data, thus ensuring continuous optimization.
Bovone uses the IoT (Internet of Things) gateway, MindConnect IoT2040 to connect to MindSphere. The decision to use Siemens automation technology is primarily based on the fact that Siemens can supply all the components and MindApps, i.e. customized applications for the cloud, from a single source. This provides the business with optimum interaction – from engineering to service.
