Optimal consulting – Siemens uses Digital Consulting to support pharmaceutical companies with digital transformation

Siemens Digitalization Consulting has already supported numerous decision-makers in pharmaceutical companies on their path to digitalization.

Can Siemens offer advice independently of their own products when helping customers to develop a digitalization strategy? This is a fair question. Working together with customers, Philippe Thiel, who specializes in digitalization consulting for the pharmaceutical industry at Siemens, has always been able quickly alleviate any concerns in this regard. “In fact, our pharmaceutical customers are often pleasantly surprised when they learn about our approach.” He finds that customers value both the holistic approach and the modular solutions. “We have a flexible, modular system that our customers can fully customize,” notes Steeve Baudry, Head of Digitalization Consulting at Siemens. 

Status quo and goals

The consulting process starts with a joint workshop attended by all the stakeholders. The workshop is used to define specific topics that concern the customer, what challenges they face, and what goals the customer has. This top-down perspective is important. “Anyone who embarks on the exciting adventure of making lasting changes to their company had better learn to see the big picture, because it isn’t a matter of fiddling around with symptoms: It requires a thorough investigation of the basic issues. For example, if the digital transformation isn’t supported by upper management, then individual technological measures on the field level won’t help over the long term,” says Baudry. A foundation of trust is also essential for the success of the project. To strengthen this trust, Siemens provides customers with a project-specific team of experts.  

Clear recommendations for action

After conducting the workshop and taking stock of the situation, this team develops the roadmap, which is effectively a user manual for digitalization. This determines which measures will be implemented, how they will be financed and when a return on investment (ROI) can be expected. “Siemens’ digital roadmap provides us with a clear schedule for how to improve our processes with validated digital systems while maintaining full data integrity. This is an extremely important step for us so that we can continue to grow in an increasingly digitalized industrial environment.
