Injection press 4.0 – Flexible control platform and digital twin speed up machine development

When developing the M-L 600 Hybrid injection press, Maico relied on solutions from the Siemens digitalization portfolio, saving both time and money.

The Siemens solution comprises Simatic ET 200SP distributed I/Os, Sinamics S120 converters and Simotics 1FW3 electric motors for controlling and driving the M-L 600 Hybrid injection molding press. The Simatic ET 200SP Open Controller is the first controller of this type to combine the functions of a PC-based software controller with visualization, PC applications and central I/Os (inputs/outputs) in a compact device. This application is the first one at Maico to use the Plastics Solutions Package. Freely combinable, quality-assured modules from the plastics library and a standardized hardware basis with Simatic S7-1500, Simatic ET 200SP Open Controller, Sinamics drives and Simotics motors are the foundation of every plastics machine solution. Operation is via a Simatic Flat Touch Panel. The digital twin which is required for virtual commissioning was created using the NX Mechatronics Concept Designer, a software package for mechatronics design, with the Simatic Machine Simulator, a software package for the virtual commissioning of machines. Motion control is via the Simotion motion control system.

Maico Pressen is a specialist in thermal injection molding and a leader in the plastics industry with its plants.

Significant cost and time savings

By using the seamless Siemens solution, Maico was able to significantly shorten the machine development process, which leads to considerable cost savings. The digital twin also enables the early validation of machine properties via virtual commissioning, which simplifies and speeds up actual commissioning. The Simatic ET 200SP Open Controller has unlimited compatibility and communication capabilities, enabling Maico to meet strict requirements in terms of quality and a desire for customized configurations.
