Future-proof remote access – New product features and updates extend possible applications for remote terminal units

Siemens is extending the possible applications of Simatic remote terminal units through the new Simatic RTU3041C and firmware update V4.0 for the RTU3000C family.

Siemens is offering the additional RTU3041C hardware version for LTE-M and NB-IoT mobile wireless networks with integrated GPS (Global Positioning System) functionality for the Simatic RTU3000C. In addition, with the latest firmware update, further improvements have also been made to the RTU3000C which optimize handling and widen the range of possible applications.

Future-proof low power mobile wireless standards

The new Simatic RTU3041C features an integrated modem for connection to LTE-M and NB-IoT cellular networks and GPS functionality. Both future-proof LPWA (Low Power Wide Area, network protocol) mobile wireless standards are explicitly designed for low power operation and IoT applications. They support long ranges, while also ensuring better network coverage and building penetration. In addition, they have a high level of energy efficiency and support functions for the further optimization of current consumption. The eDRX (Extended Discontinuous Reception) power saving function can be used to reduce energy consumption, depending on application requirements and support from the network operator.

Remote access to process instrumentation

Support of Simatic PDM ensures efficient and convenient remote access to connected Modbus RTU or HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer, communication standard) sensors for remote maintenance applications. For connection to the telecontrol center, alongside standard protocols such as IEC 60870-5-104 and DNP3, proven protocols such as Sinaut ST7 and TeleControl Basic are also available. The RTU3000C offers various options for flexible connection to the telecontrol network, for example via an integrated mobile wireless modem or external industrial routers such as Scalance M. The compact RTUs are optimized for low power operation and ideal for energy-self-sufficient use in environments without a local power grid. Configuration is via web-based management.

Optimized creation of the control application

The new "Formula" function block in firmware V4.0 or higher can be used to compile more complex operations efficiently in the control program. The function block calculates mathematical and Boolean expressions from one to four input variables. Security-relevant functions have also been improved.
