The bendy road
Siemens has become one of very few companies worldwide to sign up for four ambitious sustainability initiatives at once: We’re supporting three initiatives led by the Climate Group – RE100, EP100 and EV100. In addition, we joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we commit to a science-based reduction pathway along our entire value chain. In this way, we’re ensuring that our climate-protection efforts are in harmony with the Paris Climate Agreement’s highest level of ambition.
What do our commitments mean?
Siemens has made these pledges to strengthen its existing activities for achieving real-world decarbonization throughout its entire value chain. In doing so, the company is pursuing the science-based pathway to reduction that the SBTi advocates. Within the framework of this initiative, we’re also part of a worldwide community of companies that share the same values and goals.
By 2030:
  • we aim for electric vehicles to account for 100 percent of our fleet (EV100 – electric vehicles);
  • we will own or lease only buildings that have net-zero carbon emissions (EP100 – energy productivity);
  • we will source 100-percent renewable power (RE100 – renewable energy); and
  • we intend to achieve a 20-percent reduction in our supply chain’s emissions.
Back in September 2015, Siemens became one of the world’s first global industrial companies to announce its intention to become carbon neutral in its operating business by 2030. Our intermediate target for achieving this aim was to cut our CO2 emissions in half by 2020. We exceeded that interim goal in September 2020 and have already reduced our emissions by 54 percent. Applying Siemens’ own solutions and technologies is a key element in pursuing this objective.
As part of our decarbonization program, we already publish data on the upstream greenhouse-gas emissions produced by our suppliers. Siemens has some 65,000 suppliers worldwide. Since 2019, we’ve been working intensively on a process for determining our carbon footprint and for reducing emissions by establishing individual target agreements. We aim to achieve an emission-free supply chain by the year 2050.
We recognize that sustainability must be the foundation of our way doing business and that we have an even greater impact through our customers’ operations.

Our Sustainability Commitments

Science Based Targets Initiative

Science Based Targets initiative

In order to contain the dramatic effects of climate change, Siemens has committed to a science based emissions reduction, by setting a 1.5 C target.
RE 100

RE 100

Siemens is part of the RE 100 global corporate renewable energy initiative, committing to 100% renewable electricity.
EP 100

EP 100

Our target is to improve our energy productivity while lowering our emissions at the same time. With this, we are also improving our competitiveness.
EV 100

EV 100

Siemens commits to 100% EV by 2030. Our goal is to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles within our fleet.
As a global technology powerhouse, Siemens is well positioned to drive solutions on electrification, automation and digitalisation to help accelerate the clean energy transition. I’m delighted that they are addressing their own operations too – through renewable power, smarter energy use and electric transport.
Science shows we must halve global emissions by the end of this decade, and this is corporate leadership across three opportunity areas that will inspire many others to follow suit.
