Fully electric city buses for environmentally friendly short-haul transport
Climate and environment-friendly urban mass transit is a vital component for improving the quality of air in cities and thus the quality of life for the inhabitants. In this respect, municipal bus services are increasingly becoming the object of attention in particular because the buses currently in use around the world are almost always powered by internal combustion engines. In order to lower the harmful emissions associated with them, urban transit operators are turning to alternative propulsion systems for buses. And this is where electromobility plays an important role.

Siemens offers public utilities, operators and municipalities a highly efficient complete solution that has been specially developed for inner-city line service using electric buses. It includes the drive motors and power converters for the vehicles, as well as the necessary external charging stations, and is based on the years of experience acquired by Siemens in the design of contact lines and power supply systems. The fully automatic charging system is designed not only for electric bus (eBus) and electric bus rapid transit (eBRT) systems, but also for plug-in hybrid vehicles. It uses the communication standard for electromobility and can be operated as an open system for charging the various types of buses. It is supplied as a turnkey charging system that includes everything from the required electrical and structural engineering services to the integration in the existing power supply grids.

The charging technology from Siemens enables ebuses from different bus manufactures to charge at the same charging stations. Siemens is thus the first supplier worldwide to provide a charging infrastructure for e-buses that ensures interoperability for vehicles from different manufacturers.

The charging process is per open international standards IEC 61851 and ISO 15118 that are the basis for e-bus charging systems. The open standards enable vehicles from different manufacturers to use the same charging system. This solution allows operators to select their e-buses independently of the charging infrastructure and ensures their interoperability.

Gothenburg's 100% renewable electricity bus route with Siemens technology

The new electric bus route 55 between Lindholmen and Johanneberg in Gothenburg, Sweden, is now in service. Siemens, together with the communal energy supplier Göteborg Energi, has installed two high power charging stations, one at each end of the route, and supplied the complete charging system.

The vehicles are equipped with battery packs that will be charged with renewable electricity. For the first time, one Siemens charging station was installed indoors. Instead on top of a mast system, the pantograph is being located on the ceiling of the building.

The HPC system uses four roof contacts that are located on two parallel lightweight guide rails and that conduct electricity to the buses' batteries. These low-wear guide rails allow bus manufacturers complete flexibility in their body design.

Since autumn 2012, the first of twelve fully electric buses have been operating in Vienna as an integral part of the regular bus route operations of the city. By the summer of 2013, the Vienna public transport operator wants to completely convert two city bus routes to electric operation.

For this dovetailing of environmentally friendly drive systems and Europe's first integration in a bus route network, the bus was recognized in October 2012 with the "EBUS Award" of the Forum for Transport and Logistics.

Electric buses begin to operate on regular bus routes

The batteries are charged using a roof pantograph at charging stations in the depot or at the terminal stops with a direct power connection, which can be reached every 8 to 15 kilometers. The buses can also be equipped with plug charging systems. The electrical energy can be fed into the battery charger through separate substations or by using the tram power supply. The energy storage system is usually charged with a slow charger at night. 

Electric buses begin to operate on regular bus routes

The batteries are charged using a rooftop pantograph at the terminal stops of each route. The buses use the overhead line of the tram network for this. As a result, the buses are also operated with energy that is fed back into the overhead grid during braking of the Siemens ULF trams.

The purely electric vehicles cause less noise and emit no local pollutants, since there is no combustion process.

Innovative eBus system from Siemens 

Siemens has developed a pantograph/charging solution with grid connections specifically for bus lines. The high-power charging stations (HPC) can charge the bus batteries within four to ten minutes at regular intervals, enabling them to complete a full day of scheduled service.
